Re: Emulating an Amstrad PC5286

A lot of time ago, Amstrad Plc gave permission to use Sinclair (and I guess Amstrad CPC) but only on emulators (not on real machines like ZX-Uno or clones like Harlequin). I'm sure that somebody commented, but... - I don't know if they gave permission for all of their ROMs/BIOS (including things lik...

Re: Clustersize (and other things) ignored by MSDOS?

I don't think that changing parameters on a filesystem is a wise move, it would lead to a heavily corrupt filesystem (did you try to execute chkdsk after that?). If you change those parameters and then format the filesystem again, MS-DOS will do with their default parameters... so everything will be...

Documentation bugs/undocumented things

Hi I've been mining inside PCem.exe (v17) and looking to the README. So far, there are some bugs and other findings. Bugs IBM PC: ibmpc/basicc11.f6, ibmpc/basicc11.f8, ibmpc/basicc11.fa and ibmpc/basicc11.fc are mentioned in the documentation. They are not mentioned in PCem.exe, so I guess it won't ...

Re: Hard drive for the Compaq Deskpro 386

AFAIR, Compaq used ESDI hard drives on their Deskpro computers.

My Deskpro PCem machine uses a WD1007 ESDI controller and a 1024h 8c 17s hard drive (those figures came from the Deskpro datasheets), but in older versions you could use XTIDE BIOS as non-native HDD controller.

There's no such thing as abandonware. Did you miss a word? The sentence should be: There's no such thing as legal abandonware. I like having a term like abandonware to refer to software that is not cared for anymore, but (as you tried to explain) unless the copyright owner releases it as public dom...

The is no problem to include the MD5/SHA1, the thing is that there is not just ONE valid file. There are many versions of a same ROM and all should work Should != will. The thing is that PCem programmers check their changes with a set of ROMs. Other ROMs for the same system may be untested and may ...

Maybe it could be interesting to create "virtual" USB HID or MSD devices. Something like getting keyboard/mouse/joystick input and feed it into that virtual HID device. It would be a way to overcome the axis/buttons limitations of traditional gameport. MSD devices could be emulated using a...

It's complaining about some opengl development package, so you'll need something like libgl-dev. In Debian, it's a virtual package (provided by libgl1-mesa-dev).

Although there were 15000 rpm SCSI disks, I don't think they would be available at Pentium II era. Also, to match speeds settings you'll have to include some of this parameters: - Interleave (very important for MFM and RLL disks). - How many ms takes the head motor to jump from a track to the next. ...

Windows 10 lets you choose volume settings on a per-applications basis. That affects to volume and audio output (i.e.: choosing between internal audio, a PCI souncard or an HDMI output).

So... do you have the right audio output selected with enough volume?

AFAIK, MacOS 9 runs on Power PC CPUs and earlier releases on 68000 series. Nothing related to 80x86 CPUs/architecture (except some Macintosh that had a PDS card, like Power Macintosh 6100... but still far away from PCs). The only Macintosh that resembles PC architecture are modern ones, and that CPU...

Re: Autodesk 3DS R4 “SentinelPro must be plugged into parallel port”

Some (more than ten) years ago I used an unofficial DOSBox version patched with LPT passthrough to run a DOS program that needed a dongle. Also, I guess there must be some virtual machines that support LPT passthrough. Even in that case, you'll need a REAL (=NOT USB) parallel port in your computer a...

I'd try a Puppy Linux, but that can be tricky. It seems that 4.x versions can run on 128 Mb, and that versions are easy to find/download. The tricky part is that you'll need to install it to hard disk (do NOT use a frugal installation), then add devx packages (to get your GCC, but I don't know which...

I rather like the idea that when creating an HD, it could be possible to select from a list of makes and models, much like you can with other hardware. I guess the only standard profile would be an XT with MDA/CGA with or without IDE hard disk, because this are the only roms available in PCem web (and everybody should have them), at least if you try to distribute them. For other "standard" computers, I'll mimic existing PCs. For PC/XT/AT ...

Virtualbox is virtual machine software, PCem is an emulator - they aren't really the same thing at all. Does this happen with real 486DX hardware? It's odd that it only happens with 486DX CPUs. This sort of thing leads me to believe that it's an actual bug with them or the recompiler (which is slat...

To use XT-IDE ROM, open the configuration and go to the disks tab. In HDD, you must choose [IDE] XT-IDE or [IDE] XT-IDE (AT) and PCem will use that ROM. (If your computer is a IBM PS/1 model 2011, PCem will use a specific XT-IDE ROM automatically) The bad news is that you can only load XT-IDE ROMs, ...

On second thought, HD disks needs faster FDCs that maybe weren't supported in plain DOS 2.0, but I wonder it there existed a driver that could read HD floppies. If the limit is imposed by the FDC (I mean, the routines that access the FDC) it have sense that the limit are DD disks, but DOS should be ...

My ZX Spectrum +3 (a Z80 machine) had a 3 inch floppy drive (single sided, 180k/side) but can be fitted with 3.5 inch drives. +3DOS will format any disk to 180k, but (with the right tools) can use the whole 720k and plain +3DOS (was stored in ROM, so it can't be changed easil...
