Re: Thank You SarahWalker for PCem

Well said! Thank you Sarah for making such a good program. PCem solved a lot of software problems and made modern computing much more enjoyable by ending so many compatibility issues with modern Windows, be it XP, 7, 8 or 10. I also appreciate getting the chance to try some old PC games from the 90s...

Re: Most affordable CPU to emulate the most powerful CPU without stutter?

I get fairly good PCem performance on my i7 9750H powered lenovo laptop. I much prefer the Pentium MMX over the K6-2, the latter of which is not as smooth or dependable. Pentium MMX performance is top notch, with no sound stuttering in-game. Even video works well. PCem has evolved to the point I cou...

Re: Future graphics card emulation

My experience with the K6-2 300 Mhz on just a socket 7 motherboard was positive. Star Trek Armada II, a game that requires a Pentium II 300 or an AMD Athlon processor of similar performance, ran just fine on the K6-2 300 on that socket 7 motherboard. The Voodoo 2 worked well for that game, and most ...

Re: PCem v15 Sound Issue

PoloniumRain, I hope I am not asking the wrong questions. I think your analysis and assessment of PCem is good, but I admit I am using an Intel CPU on my laptop. My v16 tests have yet to produce this serious sound stuttering problem. May I ask if you have tried earlier versions of PCem? Versions 13....

Re: PCem v15 Sound Issue

Hopefully someone finds a solution for this issue soon. May I ask if you have tried another video card, such as the S3 Trio 64 or the ATI Video Xpression? I typically set the Video speed to default. Are you using a large virtual hard disk? Mine are normally 2gb in size. Also, how much RAM have you a...

Re: PCem v15 Sound Issue

Welcome to the site PoloniumRain. May I ask which emulated hardware you are using? I use the Sound Blaster 16 for Win95/98 and I have not had any of these sound stuttering issues. For DOS games I use the Sound Blaster 2.0. I agree that this could be a Windows 10 issue. I noticed that Windows 10 v190...

Re: Voodoo3 support in Future ?

The only games I can think of that need the Voodoo3 are Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy and Star Trek: Bridge Commander, all of which run better on an XP system than they ever did on a Pentium II even with a Voodoo3. Any game in this category can be run in VMware using XP or Win7. The one game I tried wi...

Re: GPU requirements?

You would want a CPU exceeding 4 Ghz to run a Pentium MMX in PCem at top performance. For the DOS and early Pentium I tasks you have described above I think your AMD Phenom II X6 will do a fine job. You would certainly get a Pentium 100 working without performance problems.

Re: Voodoo3 support in Future ?

Sarah, may I ask if the ATI Video Xpression you mention is the Xpression 3D or just the normal VT2 without 3D capabilities? The reason I ask is because I had the ATI Video Xpression 3D back in the day, and it had decent 3D capabilities, though not at all on the same level as the Matrox Mystique or t...

Have you tried using the AMI 486 Clone bios instead of the WinBios 486? I found the AMI Clone bios to be of very high quality, especially in v15. I am doing some v16 testing now, but I have not seen this bug at all.

I am not sure it makes sense to expect Pentium III emulation anytime soon. A very large number of Win95/98 games will work fine on a Pentium MMX system. A lot of the Pentium III games can be run on a modern computer or through a virtual machine running WinXP. Even some of the Pentium II games can be...

Thank you for your question. For your 10gb hard drive, 20807 cylinders will set the size to the amount you want. The number of heads and sectors would stay the same (default PCem). The size of my emulated hard drives is always dependent on the task at hand. I never used the AWE32, so I would not kno...

Re: AMD FX-9590 and PCem

The FX processors had a bad reputation for a long time now, at least as far back as 2012. Re: What computer processor to emulate pentium mmx and up with PCem well?

PCem has excellent voodoo emulation. I admit I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that the Voodoo 3 would work with the Pentium I, a CPU that goes up to 200 Mhz without MMX. For anyone with a slow PC, this is a welcome move by 3Dfx back in the day. The Voodoo 2 is already a huge leap forward ...

Re: What computer processor to emulate pentium mmx and up with PCem well?

PCem is one of the best program compatibility solutions to come out in the last 15 years. If your Win 95/98 (or even DOS) program does not work on your modern computer, PCem is your best option short of actually having a Pentium 2 or Pentium 3 PC. I think it is easier to simply buy a modern PC and u...

Re: What computer processor to emulate pentium mmx and up with PCem well?

There's still that Direct3D 6-7 primary device gap that VM software can't touch. Also as for VirtualBox, they're retiring the video device that brings 2K/XP OpenGL passthrough pretty soon. (the other newer devices don't have a 2K/XP guest additions driver (yet?)) I can confirm this leilei. I had to...

Re: What computer processor to emulate pentium mmx and up with PCem well?

Building a new desktop PC would most likely go well with the 9900, though the new 9900KS CPU may provide much stronger performance if it is successful this Fall. As for laptops, seems the only way to get K6-2 and K6-III performance would be with the Alienware Area 51m. I needed a new laptop myself, ...

Have you tried the K6-2 350 Mhz cpu? I tried that with the game Elite Force (circa 2000), and even though I ran PCem v15 through a VMWare virtual machine I had surprisingly good performance throughout the game. I ran system tests on the i7 8750H and i7 9750H CPUs, and the latter is much more PCem-friendly, while the former could run most 166 MMX tasks well. The 9750H works at about 4.15 Ghz, which is fine for almost any game, but if the sound...

I am not sure what the effect of allocating massive amounts of RAM to an old 386 or 486 would have on performance. Typically I only allocate the same amount of RAM that these old systems would have had back in 1992 or even 1995. It was normal for a Win95 pc to have 16mb of RAM. I know that adding mo...
