Re: Windows XP no sound

I got sound working in XP without 3rd party drivers. XP comes with the drivers for those old sound cards. XP even comes with the Voodoo 3 drivers. Whether games will work in XP with such old emulated hardware, that is a different matter. Win 2000 is definitely not the first choice for games, but som...

Re: PCem's biggest limitation for 3D accelerted games

PCem is one of the best programs out there for win95/98 compatibility. In so many cases it is the best, indeed the only PC emulation solution. If you need more emulated PC power, then you can try VMWare, which is good for most programs that would need a Pentium 3 or Pentium 4. The need for emulated ...

Re: Akte Europa optimisation

Hi, My PCem VM for Star Wars Rebellion uses the Virge DX. I did not include the Voodoo 2 at all. I use the S3 Trio 64 for Jazz Jackrabbit. Sometimes the S3 Trio 64 is the best way to go. It all depends on what works best with your program or game. My last Star Wars Rebellion test went really well. I...

Re: Akte Europa optimisation

I am not familiar with this program, but the system requirements are similar to games like TIE Fighter and Jedi Knight. I recommend using an older video card like the Virge/DX or the S3 Trio 64. Try to make sure you max out the video RAM for the video card you are using, or performance in-game might...

Re: PCEM emulation of Dell Latitude C640 Pentium 4 Win 98

Ugh. Man I was hoping this was going to be the ticket to being able to play these games. Turns out my Latitude C640 decided to crap out too (the lcd inverter is dead so I can see a screen, it just has no brightness whatsoever), so that is no longer an option. There are just a handful of games that ...

Re: PCEM emulation of Dell Latitude C640 Pentium 4 Win 98

Virtual CDs typically work better with the BIN/CUE format rather than the ISO format. ISO does not typically produce a perfect 1:1 copy of a game CD from the mid-late 90s as the older games often use RedBook Audio (ie. CD audio) or some other audio system that does not get copied with ISO. A program...

Re: PCEM emulation of Dell Latitude C640 Pentium 4 Win 98

Welcome JP. PCem can help you run Bridge Commander (BC). I never tried Jane's USAF, but its release date of 1999 suggests PCem is a good fit for that one too. The Pentium II and Voodoo 3 work very well with BC. You can use VMWare for Bridge Commander if you want to use mods with the game. You need W...

Re: PCem v18 News (Was v17 Notice)

One game that always ran better in PCem than any other compatibility solution was Dominion Wars. It is a 2001 era game that runs ok using the Voodoo 2. Before PCem v17 it was the best way to run that old game. I find the Voodoo 3 emulation to be so good in PCem v17 that it is by far the best way to ...

Sometimes it really is easier to run certain games native on Win10. Both Rome Total War and Medieval 2 Total War come to mind. Unless you want to run a music mod for RTW, even a modest one, Steam is not enough. Most of the time, and for a lot of us this meant years, PC compatibility issues necessita...

Thank you for your advice.

I really hope the 13th gen Intel laptop CPUs can do the job. Unreal Tournament (1999) is always fun to play, but it would be nice to get it running at 100% in PCem. VMWare runs the game fine, but PCem is so cool.

Re: PCem windows 95 not detecting CD for certain games

I highly recommend using the bin/cue format for your virtual CDs. ISO usually fails to produce a 1:1 copy of your actual game CD, especially for games like Jedi Knight or X-Wing vs TIE Fighter with the redbook audio technology used to give you such great CD music in-game. Newer games like Jedi Outca...

The issue of adding newer PC hardware to PCem is not only getting it done right, but also optimizing PCem so that such newer emulated hardware can be used on existing PCs, laptop and desktop computers. If the Pentium 3 or 4 is added, it is not just the CPU, it is also the much newer motherboards, DD...

PCem is a great program, and a great project. If I buy a new PC, it has to be able to run PCem at full specs. I do not know if the new CPUs are able to do that. With Pentium 2 emulation and Voodoo 3 emulation, there are very few, if any, Windows 98 tasks that cannot be done in PCem today. For budget...

One option would be to use DOS as a means to install Win98 without a boot disk, unless you have one handy. If you have DOS, you can install that on a 2gb VM in PCem. Once DOS is installed, you need to install CD-ROM drivers, preferably from the 1996-1998 era. If you have an old CD-ROM driver CD or d...

3.2 Ghz was typically enough for a Pentium 90 or Pentium 100, but that was 5 years ago. If you can run a Pentium 133 on 3.2 Ghz today then that would be really good. I agree with leilei, you will need a CPU with an all-core turbo speed of at least 4 Ghz to get a Pentium 200. Today you should aim hig...

Re: noob question - pcem process not being more than 10% in task manager when struggling to emulate even a 150mhz pentiu

PCem typically needs an all-core turbo 4.0 Ghz+ CPU to run Pentium tasks with reasonable performance. If you run PCem on a system that fast with a single-core turbo speed of 4.5 Ghz+ then you should get much better performance. My 9750h-based laptop can run PCem with the emulated Pentium II 300 and ...

My recommendation would also give preference to Windows 98 SE over Windows 95. Win98 SE is typically easier to get working and is the better OS in my opinion. Some people like Win95 better and that is fine. I use it too. If you have a bootable CD for Win95 or Win98 SE, then you should be able to get...
