Re: Speed timings for emulated hard disks

I rather like the idea that when creating an HD, it could be possible to select from a list of makes and models, much like you can with other hardware. Granted, it'd be little more than a cosmetic thing right now, but it'd make sizing drives easier, and not coming up with wacky geometry some OSes mi...

There we go, that fixed it. A subtlety I'd not noticed!

Thanks :)

Re: [Feb 2018 ed.] PCem MSYS2 build guide (with wxWidgets)

I've been using MSYS2 MSYS, as the guide said. I'll give it a whirl with the MingGW shell instead.

Re: [Feb 2018 ed.] PCem MSYS2 build guide (with wxWidgets)

I've followed through the build instructions, and come to a juddering halt: Dave@DESKTOP-HTLI9DO MSYS ~/pcem # ./configure --enable-networking --enable-release-build configure: loading site script /etc/config.site checking build system type... x86_64-pc-msys checking host system type... x86_64-pc-ms...

Re: Run to instances of PCem and make a share network

It's not possible with the released versions (v14 and below) as the MAC address of the emulated NIC is hardcoded. So basically if you ran two instances, you'd have a MAC address conflict which means the two clients wouldn't be able to communicate. There's a patch for it so you'd have to compile from...

3. Yes, uncheck "Synchronize time to host clock". Then you'll be free to date the bios to whatever yesteryear as you please. I still have to keep multiple PCems as I can't have specified separate, BIOS settings yet (i.e. using 430vx to recreate similar other socket 7/slot1 systems i've ha...

Re: A little wishlist if I may...

We all have tons of ideas and requests, but we can't complain: Sarah works hard on this, we just saw more than 3000 lines of code being added I agree with most of your requests, especially the number 5. I posted something similar some weeks ago. Real hard disks names, a droplist of... let's say 20 ...

A little wishlist if I may...

Apologies if this is the wrong place for this. I've been mulling over a few little suggestions for PCem. Bearing in mind I've zero clue how complex some of these are, it's easy to blindly request, so I appreciate some of these may be a little pie in the sky! If nothing else, I hope this acts as good...

Re: Feature request: revamping config files

Personally (just IMHO) I'd like something more like how Virtualbox or VMWare Workstation handles it, insomuch as the emulation isn't launched when I run the executable, rather it asks which config to load, then goes from there (or create a new one). A few times I've launched it and not managed to lo...

Re: Blinking cursor or something in the upper right corner of screen

WinUAE has a status bar across the bottom of the screen which shows HDD, Floppy and CD statuses by blinking things down there. Maybe that's a neater solution.

Re: Random screenshots

That Windows 95 machines reminds me of an actual PC I encountered years ago back at a little computer shop I worked at. As was typical at the time, this guy had a 'mate down the pub' who told him he could make it run super fast and save disk space by converting his Windows 95 PC to loads of little 2...

Re: v12 released!

Having just seen your comment Sarah, I just fired up PCEm and the performance was kinda pants again. I noticed this time that my AV (Sophos) was going bananas in the background. I think as soon as I fire up PCEm for the first time, Sophos sees it read the disk image, and stomps all over it affecting...

Re: v12 released!

It would appear unticking the option to sync clock to host speeds it up no end. At that point it is noticeably faster. I've managed to run 3D Mark 99 with the Voodoo2, and a MMX 166 with 64Mb RAM got a score of about 1400. Ran pretty well actually! So yeah, good stuff. :D Thanks, Sarah and all those...

Re: v12 released!

I've been trying out the new version, and I've found it's a bit slower for me. I've tried D3D and DirectVideo modes, and whilst Direct3D is faster, the performance is kinda choppy. I've got a Windows 98 SE VM, which is a Pentium MMX 200, and it was pretty much fine on V11. Audio worked very well, an...

Re: Recommended configurations?

I've been trying to stick to 'realistic' specs, because it increases the chance of software running more reliably (I think, anyway), and the purist in me just likes it that way. :D

Re: Recommended configurations?

I guess you're trying to play a game that uses the Voodoo card, right? Try playing with the Voodoo settings to see if you have better results I'm trying to boot to the Windows 98 SE desktop! I'm getting choppy performance just booting up! Try changing the renderer to Direct3D (I think default is Di...

Re: Recommended configurations?

Well weirdly, lowering the cache has made it better, but it's still choppy in audio.

I'll try compiling latest, but I can't find any docs on how to. I've compiled loads of stuff on Linux, but never been successful in Windows, so I'll need a few pointers, please. :)

Re: Recommended configurations?

See, you say that, but apparently this laptop has other ideas! I started out on the P166MMX, but I was getting 50% CPU performance, if that, and horribly choppy audio. I've got the cache set to infinite, and I've dropped the CPU down to P75, yet it's still hammering the host CPU, and the emulated sp...

Re: Recommended configurations?

That's excellent, very useful, thanks!

I've give those specs a whirl and see how I get on. I might try Windows 98 onto the higher spec, 95 on the 486, 3.1 on the 386, and see how they fare.

Recommended configurations?

I've been playing around with PCem for quite a while, and I really do love it. However, I've had mixed success with what works, and what doesn't. I appreciate that there's a great amount of hardware emulated, and the development is focused on certain areas, so I think I've occasionally fallen foul o...
