Re: PCEM Skin Wrappers?
Great Idea! MAME can do this - or to be exact, some guests can if somebody creates the necessary artworks. Well, in practice I love it but dont use it - and I fear that would be the case here also. You would really need a huge screen to make the smaller PCem window meaningful. But there is a simple ...

Re: v17 compatibility & bug list
Don't know if PCem emulates any chipsets that'd satisfy SeaBIOS. The information on SeaBIOS seems rather vague and feature-list focused. Ditto for any of the Cirruses involved with Bochs/Qemu. Interesting, I didn't know about SeaBIOS. Its here, in any case: https://www.seabios.org/SeaBIOS Apparentl...

FreeDOS now works
I did not find it mentioned anywhere, so let me just report that v17 runs FreeDOS (www.freedos.org) with both "minimum" and extended "jemm" memory manager. Running games works without problems (it did not test extensively, but encountered no problems). In addition, booting from C...

Re: How to install PCem v16 on Linux
Its the same with me: Nvidias own. This is really beyond my Linux knowledge. My best guess is that one of the needed virtual / meta packages that got installed on your system was partly removed or something like that. Maybe lost some needed configuration file or something like that. Had it happen al...

Re: How to install PCem v16 on Linux
Yep, I got those too (Ubuntu 20.04). No Idea when and why I installed it. Long before PCem, in any case. Ah, the wonders of Linux packages. Well, I guess the command goes like this:
Code: Select all
sudo apt install libgl1-mesa-dev

Re: How to install PCem v16 on Linux
i have the same packages (except that I also have the 386 variants, but they are not needed for PCem, I guess). Do you have Nvidia or AMD or Intel grapics? And if it is Nvidia, do you have open drivers (Noveau) or Nvidia closed source?

spiderman82, could you check if opengl/mesa is installed? Run this in a terminal:
Code: Select all
sudo apt list mesa*

Re: IBM PC XT does not work anymore on v16?
widge, just to make sure - can you run other machines? Can you run the "generic XT" machine with the generic XT bios? That can be downloaded on the PCem website.

Re: IBM PC XT does not work anymore on v16?
Strange, IBM XT emulation works for me on PCem v16. You could try to create a special configuration for this. In the PCem menu, select "New" config and then fill it out accordingly. Try very low specs: Machine: 8088 at 4,77 MHZ Memory: 640 KB Graphics: CGA or Hercules Speed: Default No HDD...

Re: How to install PCem v16 on Linux
About the same, I would say. It is really difficult to answer because it is difficult to carry configurations over from Windows to Linux, or recreating the exact same circumstances. The best way would be to create an ideal benchmark situation. Maybe an old benchmarking tool on a floppy disk image, w...

Re: How to install PCem v16 on Linux
Sorry, I was wrong in my previous post. Do not use bios files with lowercase filenames only. Instead, the files must be named exactly as stated in readme.txt of PCem. So, the Atari PC 3 will need a file called "AWARD_ATARI_PC_BIOS_3.08.BIN" while the AMI XT will need "ami_8088_bios_31...

Re: How to install PCem v16 on Linux
Something else I noticed - its related to LInux, so I thought Id just mention it here. If you run PCem with Wine instead of using the native Linux port, it works excellently, but the emulation thread is not closed in the end, but stays in the background. I dont mean the menu, but the "worker&qu...

Re: How to install PCem v16 on Linux
Progress! I found out why every config was reset to AMI XT. Seems that PCem Linux expects every bios name to be in lowercase. EDIT: Sorry, I was wrong but I think I got it now: The files must be named exactly as stated in readme.txt of PCem. So, the Atari PC 3 will need a file called "AWARD_ATA...

How to install PCem v16 on Linux
I just installed PCem v16 successfully on Ubuntu 20.04. Just wanted to give you a short update, because the Instructions in Readme-Linux.txt did not work for me. Specifically, I had to run configure like this: ./configure --enable-release-build The additional libraries I could install with "apt...

Re: v15 released!
This may be off-topic, but then maybe not. Id like to congratulate you on the release of Arculator 2.0 which has been released a few days ago. It emulates many Acorn Archimedes systems with very high compatibility. I guess many people in this forum are interested in old computers in general, so go c...

Re: Maybe create a set of recommended system profiles?
Well... no :-) Using PCem to create a machine with Intel Premiere / PCI chipset, the default graphics card is CGA, sound card is "none", and I get two 3,5"-floppys. The same is true when creating a 8088 machine - which is especially bad, since floppy images will be on 5,25" for su...

Re: Maybe create a set of recommended system profiles?
Well, I see no obvious solution to the ROM problem. Except handling it as if everybody had all of them. Or - another idea - really create a standard configuration for all of the different models. I.E. when the user selects "create new machine", he can select the machine model and then we p...

Maybe create a set of recommended system profiles?
What I would like to see in pcem is a set of default system profiles, at least for the most important PC configurations. I would be willing to help if there is an interest in this. This would be a set of pcem cfg files, which are kept as close to the real hardware as possible. So, if a user creates ...

Re: Do you have any luck with FreeDos 1.4 installation?
Sorry, my mistake, the 1.4 is the PCem version, not FreeDos. FreeDos is still at 1.2 as far as I know. I tried with FreeDos 1.2, in any case (on PCem 1.4, just to be exact). The UDVD driver is the culprit, then. Hopefully it will be fixed one day. Anyway, as long as FreeDos doesnt work with the free...

Do you have any luck with FreeDos 1.4 installation?
Hi PCem experts! I have been following the development of PCem closely and Im very impressed at thiis point. I like installing and trying out old and sometimes obscure OSes, and PCem is great for this. it is a lot of fun seeing the bootup screen of OS2 v2.1 for the first time in, well, a lot of year...
