This idea seems to have a potential beyond just adding emulation of null modem serial cables, it could be also used to add emulation of actual modems (and their chipsets), and possibly allow web browsing at dial-up speeds. There is modem emulation in DOSBox using TCP/IP interfacing and Hayes AT mode...

Is the RAM not counting after a soft reboot (via CTRL-ALT-DEL or Windows 9x restart) normal? In previous versions, when either of these resets were performed, the BIOS RAM counting would occur like it does on a cold boot or a hard reset. (Issue shows on Shuttle HOT-557). Yes, that's totally normal....

You definitely cannot use more than 28MB by means of the AWE32 API, because the addresses that would permit addressing those 4 remaining megabytes address the internal ROM memory. [Patch] Sound Blaster AWE32 RAM selection

I have created a patch which allows the selection of RAM sizes of 4MB, 16MB and 32MB on the Sound Blaster AWE32 sound card.

Contrary to official Creative documentation, the EMU8000 can handle these RAM amounts.

Is that really a level accuracy we need? Most people aren't going to choose to emulate a terrible and slow old HDD over the modern 7200RPM unit or even SSD the HDD image is saved to. The crackling does not appear to be game related, I have also heard the crackling on all programs that utilize MIDI playback.

Also, the digital sound no longer works on DOS Miles Sound System based games, and detecting the card in such a game fails, followed by a very high pitched whine.

The soundblaster AWE32 and AWE64 use the EMU8000 chip for wavetable synthesis. The soundblaster Live uses the EMU10K1 chip. Windows ME's support for DOS applications is rather shaky compared to Windows 95 or 98 (and it does not have support for Real Mode DOS), so I would recommend you use either Windows 95 or 98 for using DOS applications, as they both have support for Real Mode DOS and DOS box support.

I have tested it with both Epic and non-Epic games, and the problem is similar, in fact the crackling even shows up during normal Windows and DOS MIDI playback.

I have noticed that with this soundcard, there is a lot of annoying crackling that should not occur on the real card.
