Re: Cannot format blank floppy disk ?!

In the meantime you can just use a machine with a non AMI bios and formatting works fine.

Re: Cannot format blank floppy disk ?!

It doesn't work because it's a bug :p - Sarah reads the forums and so she will be aware of it and I'm sure it'll be fixed.

Re: Cannot format blank floppy disk ?!

You need to give more details than "it doesn't work" for any report to be useful (i.e. which machine config, error msg, etc).

That said I'm guessing it's the same issue as this: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3640

[BUG] Floppy drive formatting issues

I'm having issues formatting floppies on some machines when trying to format a 1.44M image (tried in MS DOS 3.3 and 6.22 with nothing loaded). Configuration is set to a 1.44M drive and the BIOS is set to 1.44M also. EDIT: I tried a couple more machines and it looks like it might affect all AMI BIOS ...

Re: v17 compatibility & bug list

Borland Turbo Pascal 6 and 7 (for DOS) causes a full lock up a few seconds after loading in Windows 3.11 when the dynamic recompiler is enabled. On a 486 machine with it disabled it runs absolutely fine, with it enabled it locks up. On Pentium machines it seems you can't disable it, and it locks up ...

Re: Best option for Windows 3.11 and high res/colours

I'm not sure if there's a regression with this since I last tried. When I installed these drivers on v17 (tried a couple of machine types) on an otherwise totally vanilla set up, opening a DOS session in Windows locks up the emulated system every time. I tried it with and without emm386 loaded. I gu...

Ah, I thought they'd probably be ignored. I guess emulating a lot of the finer details in chipsets would be a huge amount of work for mostly just academic benefit.

Question about lower level hardware emulation

In the BIOS settings for most 486+ machines you get options to change lots of advanced things like AT bus speed, IO recovery, ISA waitstates, etc. Does changing these have any effect on emulation at all? I tried setting things to options that I imagine would stop any real PC from even POSTing but co...

Re: v15 & new recompiler update

Hey Sarah, I was just wondering if you'd decided to make development private until release, as I noticed the repository hasn't had many updates at all for quite a while. Seems we're just getting towards spring so I'm looking forward to seeing what v15 has.

Seems the Red Hat problem has led to all sorts of issues. I hope it's exposed proper bugs rather than just been a pain!

Re: Floppy emulation on old versions of Linux

I investigated this a little more. The same lockup problem occurs in Red Hat 5.2, but this is available as a bootable ISO CD. It wasn't anything to do with booting from the floppy itself. If I disabled the floppy controller in the BIOS the CD would boot normally (but obviously without any floppy dri...

Re: Amstrad 1512 HD Version

The XTIDE BIOS is already in PCem I think, you can select the controller under "HDD" in settings. The Xebec BIOS must be called ibm_xebec_62x0822_1985.bin and copied to the roms folder.

Re: Amstrad 1512 HD Version

Ok, you need the BIOS for the Xebec adapter for it to work. You should be able to find it online.

Alternatively you might be able to get XTIDE to work, this is emulating a modern bit of hardware for old 8bit XT PCs and its BIOS is included.

Re: Amstrad 1512 HD Version

You select the MFM fixed disk adapter as the hard drive type in settings, it's the original IBM XT hard drive controller and emulation is provided by PCem.

Re: Amstrad 1512 HD Version

You can add the MFM fixed adapter and use one of the supported disk types (type 13 at 20mb is fine), and it will automatically work under DOS 2 or later. It installs its own BIOS to enable support, and DOS 2 is required for HD support.

Re: Floppy emulation on old versions of Linux

The image works on VirtualBox and on the unofficial PCem fork - maybe there's some bug with how it sends raw codes to the drive instead of using the BIOS?

Floppy emulation on old versions of Linux

With older Linux systems that were installed using a floppy there seems to be a bug with floppy drive detection. The boot begins but when the kernel finds the drive(s) it freezes. I've tried a few emulated machines and it's the same result. Here is Red Hat Linux 4.1's boot floppy: https://ufile.io/p...

Re: Linux

Distributions from around 2000 or so should run fine on a 486, I remember it was popular to stick Linux on those back then. The desktop systems were usable for sure if a bit rough around the edges.

Re: CDROM on older machines

Ah, I thought PCEM must be injecting something since as you say the BIOS on those machines can't see anything. First, I'm not sure what you call "older machines" all PCem machines are more than 20 years old... By default, PCem assigns D: to the CDROM... but that can be easily configured in...

CDROM on older machines

I see that PCEM by default wants to add a CDROM drive to E: and that on newer machines that will add it to the 2nd native IDE controller (master). But what does it do on older machines with just one controller? Does it add its own BIOS like an expansion card? I've noticed the CD drive is still detec...
