Re: Recommended settings for Windows 98 SE on high end systems?

For my PCem emulated PC I am using a Pentium 233 MMX with 64mb of RAM, a 2 GB hard drive, Sound Blaster 16, and the Voodoo 2 graphics card paired with any of the high end 2D or 2D/3D emulated graphics cards. I use any of the Virge DX, Phoenix S3 Trio64, Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 (S3 Virge), ATI Graphi...

Re: AMD FX-9590 and PCem

The FX processors had a bad reputation for a long time now, at least as far back as 2012. I considered buying one more than once, but in the end it was not worth it, so I waited for the Intel CPUs to be improved to the point that PCem could run with a reasonable chance of success. The 8th gen laptop...

Re: What computer processor to emulate pentium mmx and up with PCem well?

PCem has excellent voodoo emulation. I admit I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that the Voodoo 3 would work with the Pentium I, a CPU that goes up to 200 Mhz without MMX. For anyone with a slow PC, this is a welcome move by 3Dfx back in the day. The Voodoo 2 is already a huge leap forward ...

Re: What computer processor to emulate pentium mmx and up with PCem well?

PCem is one of the best program compatibility solutions to come out in the last 15 years. If your Win 95/98 (or even DOS) program does not work on your modern computer, PCem is your best option short of actually having a Pentium 2 or Pentium 3 PC. I think it is easier to simply buy a modern PC and u...

Re: v15 compatibility & bug list (WIP)

Has anyone had any issues with the joystick in v15? I can use my joystick with v13.1 without much fuss, but in v15 the program recognized my joystick, but Win98 does not, yet it states that I have the maximum number of joysticks installed when I try to add my Thrustmaster joystick, which is actually...

Re: What computer processor to emulate pentium mmx and up with PCem well?

There's still that Direct3D 6-7 primary device gap that VM software can't touch. Also as for VirtualBox, they're retiring the video device that brings 2K/XP OpenGL passthrough pretty soon. (the other newer devices don't have a 2K/XP guest additions driver (yet?)) I can confirm this leilei. I had to...

Re: What computer processor to emulate pentium mmx and up with PCem well?

Building a new desktop PC would most likely go well with the 9900, though the new 9900KS CPU may provide much stronger performance if it is successful this Fall. As for laptops, seems the only way to get K6-2 and K6-III performance would be with the Alienware Area 51m. I needed a new laptop myself, ...

Re: MMX 233Mhz or Mobile MMX 266/300?

Have you tried the K6-2 350 Mhz cpu? I tried that with the game Elite Force (circa 2000), and even though I ran PCem v15 through a VMWare virtual machine I had surprisingly good performance throughout the game. It was not perfect, but it ran fairly well. Just in case you are not familiar with Elite ...

Re: Sound lag.

PCem seems to run very well with a CPU running at 4 Ghz or more. I ran system tests on the i7 8750H and i7 9750H CPUs, and the latter is much more PCem-friendly, while the former could run most 166 MMX tasks well. The 9750H works at about 4.15 Ghz, which is fine for almost any game, but if the sound...

Re: Weird ram problem

I am not sure what the effect of allocating massive amounts of RAM to an old 386 or 486 would have on performance. Typically I only allocate the same amount of RAM that these old systems would have had back in 1992 or even 1995. It was normal for a Win95 pc to have 16mb of RAM. I know that adding mo...

Re: Possiblity of implementing cache emulation

I can say that I agree with the current development of PCem. I think the devs are following a logical and straightforward design strategy that has so far produced a very nice program that runs well on modern PCs. Obviously the power of the host CPU is key to using this program. I think perfect cache...

I have been trying to test high end K6-2 and K6-III cpus but I lose the CD-ROM drive, and many system drivers including display adapter drivers in WIn98 whenever I run this motherboard in PCem. This is very odd. I can run the CD-ROM...

I have finally had the chance to try v15 on a modern laptop. It is a Lenovo laptop using the Intel Core i7 9750H processor. The cpu in question can exceed 4 Ghz, with speeds of 4.15 Ghz not uncommon. From time to time the machine will reach 4.25 ghz. I have seen spurts of 4.33 Ghz, even moments with...

So far I think v15 is a success. I am limited in what I can do with an old AMD A8 laptop, but with a new PC I should be able to do more thorough testing of the new features. I am glad it was not too difficult to install and run the Super Socket 7 CPUs, including the K6 line. I am sure it will work w...

With the FIC-VA503+ selecting high clock rate for the K6-2 or K6-III result wrongly detected by the BIOS. eg. if you select the K6-2/533 it will display as if it were a 526 mhz - a 500 k6-2 the bios will see it as a 481 mhz I am glad to have had the chance to try PCem v15. Thank you for your reply. The only reason I considered this cpu at all was because of its turbo speed of 4 Ghz. My previous PCem tests on an old AMD 6 core 2.7 Ghz CPU suggested that PCem would make full use of a CPU's turbo speed. In the case of that old desktop cpu, the boost speed was 3.11 Ghz. P...

The top speed of the Pentium I was typically 233 MMX. That would have been a good system going into 1998, and that is what I am trying to emulate myself with a new PC purchase. Ideally I would simply buy a laptop with that PCem-friendly capability, but this is hard to do today. If I bought a desktop...
