Re: Why is accessing a physical CDrom so slow ?

CD access just isn't efficient on PCem at the moment. All CD I/O (with the exception of audio playback) is handled on the main CPU thread, meaning that if it's slow for any reason (eg it's spinning up a real CD) then emulation will stall and performance will tank. It's something that's been on my li...

NE2000 doesn't have a ROM. Did you pass --enable-networking to ./configure ?

Re: MT-32 and Linux

Hmm, I would have expected the MIDI out option to show, even if the drop down menu was empty. Probably just an odd UI difference.

When you built PCem, did you pass --enable-alsa as an option to ./configure ?

In the PCem configuration, in the video pane where you selected Voodoo 3, there is a configure icon next to the graphics card selector.

These two statements are unconnected. Silicon process does not directly affect IPC.

Re: Question about lower level hardware emulation

They're pretty much all ignored.

The _sole_ exception is on 386DX systems using the OPTi495 chipset (AMI 386DX clone and MR 386DX clone), where the external cache control will alter memory speed when 'Waitstates' in the PCem configuration is set to 'System default'.

Re: dos program like prime95 to stress emulated CPU ?

Interpreter only implements up to 486 instruction timings, hence a K6 with the internal cache turned off will be performing roughly like a 486 at that clock speed.

Also new combine modes (particularly for multitexture), general purpose scan-time buffer accumulation ('T-buffer'), rotated grid sampling for antialiasing...

It's the biggest set of architectural changes in the Voodoo line.

Turning off 'internal cache' is a proxy for disabling the dynamic recompiler. PCem doesn't have any cache emulation.

Future sound card musings

Similar to the graphics card thread, here's some notes on possible future sound card emulations. As with that thread, nothing here should be taken as a statement of intent, I'm mostly just jotting down a few thoughts. This obviously does not cover every possible sound card, just the ones I'm most li...
