Re: Some noob questions from a new user...

1) Roms go in ROMS. When PCem detects them, you'll be able to use those cards. Getting Windows to recognize them often depends on finding their appropriate driver software and installing them. Win95/98 should ship with drivers for many of the earlier PCI cards (S3 Trio, ATI Mach64 etc) and DirectX 3...

Re: Low-end processor, but following programme's requirements

On the back , it does state that a Pentium 133MHz is a minimum requirement. Consider it's a 1998 release, well into the 6th generation of processors (Pentium II / AMD K6-2), 5th gen CPUs were already starting to show their age at this point to this particular rush of Win95 3d multimedia (especially...

I've a Sis496 486 config with Adaptec AHA-1542C and the CD-ROM works using Adaptec's ASPICD.SYS driver through MSCDEX 2.23.

I've accidentally made a differencing VHD to a differencing VHD and have broke the VHDs in the process.

Re: Issue intstalling Windows 95

I can think of two possible reasons...

1. Your CPU's too fast for Windows 95 (>350MHz)

2. The bootdisk being used to install is possibly infected with a boot sector virus sabotaging a fresh install immediately. (FIC VA-503+ would warn about this)

I'm assuming you don't have the proper video drivers installed as you may lack a OpenGL ICD (i.e. Windows' own WARP GL->D3D wrapper for their stock drivers doesn't implement everything)

See this thread too http://pcem-emulator.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3499 Satisfying DX9 games often requires at least DX7-baseline level hardware (if the game's generous enough to have safe pixelshader-less paths) and the gamut of that falls outside the realistic hobby-attainable scope reg...

Re: Why is accessing a physical CDrom so slow ?

I almost think it's PIO transfer mode on the host machine, which Windows can sometimes inadvertently.turn on when it has trouble reading a cd (which can happen with some protected CDs) and can be very tricky to reverse. I personally use CloneCD/VirtualCloneDrive when dealing with my protected games.

Re: Need suggestions: Best Win98 guest that can run DX9

3d games in 99 were targeting Voodoos as they were a major part of the market and they were very compatible with problematic Super7 motherboards (a major budget enthusiast part). The only thing you're really missing out on are the very few games that have 24/32-bit textures, very few games that have...

Re: Need suggestions: Best Win98 guest that can run DX9

I'd also like to point this out My aim is to be able to run 3dMark 2001 (or even 2003) smoothly. The generation of hardware PCem emulates have never run either of those smoothly in the real world (even with HWT&L capable hardware like a Geforce4), so you're setting your expectations (from even t...

Art's my main hobby and even I'm not sure of what the icon could look like (given the broad coverage of 6 computer generations)....

It'd probably have to be a very scaleable SVG for wx theme consistency, which is way out of my familiar comfort zone anyway (32x / 48x @ 256c at best)

Banshee and Voodoo3 can't SLI.

SLI would come back for the Voodoo5 later on in the form of having more VSA-100s doing the work on a single card.

Re: Question about emulator security and compatibility

If you don't want to take a chance on the internet as a driver source (I don't blame you, there's a LOT of sketchy driver websites that just want to put their 'easy' Windows-based 'updater' to obfuscate actual driver downloads which show up at the top of the searches for about 19 years now), you can...

Re: i7 or i9 for PCem?

IPC is what really counts. More cores however do benefit the Voodoo emulation (especially now that you can use 4 per card, like 8 for a Voodoo2 SLI) IPC's been improving only at a glacial pace in the past decade though (compared to 1996-2006 which were like at least 4 distinct computer eras). Gettin...

Re: CD-ROM drive not appearing in Windows 95?

This happens when something confuses Win95's IDE controller device drivers (like changing motherboards), try removing them and restarting a couple of times to redetect them. If that doesn't work and you're really desperate, you might want to try a real-mode driver (of the mscdex + oakcdrom/nec_ide.s...

Re: PCem v17 running slow/lagging

The AMD K6-2 has 3Dnow! extensions and 3dfx Voodoo2 and Voodoo3 drivers after 1999 can take advantage of them for performance gains (which can lead to heavier emulation). The achilles' heel is the VIA MVP3 chipset on the actual boards (historically, they'd skew agp compatibility towards 3dfx cards a...

If you've started PCem with the --config parameter, and the guest uses a newer APIC supported motherboard and Windows 98+ is configured for that, then it should completely exit.

Win98SE doesn't come with any AudioPCI 128/ES1371/ES1373 drivers (win98se drivers are generally current to Dec 1997+DirectX 6.1). They started adding those in Windows 2000 and Me. This was enough for my general use cases. (My fastest 100%'...

V4 changes several things: - FXT texture compression (which never really caught on despite 3dfx's best attempts at creating a new open standard, IIRC only Alice and FAKK2 bothered with FXT) - 32-bit rendering (without any screen filtering) - Larger texture size limit - Temporal full scene anti-alias...
