387 and 287XL

Post by minigig »

I am learning ASM and I an currently look at using a Math-Co in my programs. I have a real 286 with a 287XL and 386 with a 387, But I rarely have them out and all setup . PCEM works great for that but It be nice to see a 387 and options to which on to use and a 287(XL) with the XL really just a 387 and I think that would be easier to implement.

I am guessing that using a Math-CO older than a 486 is not a high priority , given the lack of games / applications that use them.

Any thoughts on implementing a 387(287XL). I am also curious to what it would take to do so. Is Dosbox code for the 387 work with PCem without too much hassle ?

Have you tested on bochs or is your question more of a curiosity? Also, Tom is working on the recompiler, and you may wait until that is finished so you can compare interpreter to recompiler core. There is information on this in wikipedia for those new to emulation.

Bochs does not have 286 emulation and I at the moment am more interested in 16bit and how the 286 did Protected mode vs the 386. Now for using a Math-Co I am sticking to 387 and newer and that the 287XL fits the bill there.

I know there are pages of information on these subjects and I have been reading everything I can find. There is something to seeing it used and working (or nor working) in a program that you wrote yourself.

In theory 287/387 could be implemented as of the recent FPU reorganisation (before it was too tied to 486+), however it's not something I'm personally intending to do any time soon.
