CD access slowdown

I don't know when or where this happened, since I didn't really do much or change much in PCem and as far as I know this wasn't always the case, but every time PCem reads from the CD drive, whether it's a real disc, an image, or otherwise, emulation speed drops below 10% as long as it continues to be "in use". Any idea what to do about this?

Wow, below 10%? It never happened to me!
Did you test many CDs? Images? Any game in particular?
Did you try with many computers?

I've never tried it off of this computer, but there's definitely something wrong because PCem never started out like this. I could try my config on a different computer and see how that works, but I can't do it at this moment. as I already said, it happens with everything. Real drives, images, it doesn't matter. If PCem has to read the disc, it slows everything down to the point that even copying a few MB will take minutes and any games that store voice or other things on CD will stutter and repeat constantly until it's no longer reading the disc.

Alright, so: As it turns out, whatever is happening with my current installation of PCem, doesn't happen if I make a new folder with a fresh copy of PCem, copying over my rom folder and HD image and reconfiguring the machine from scratch. I really don't understand what's going on here.

edit: Aside from that, I can't really find out what's wrong. There's missing lines in the new config that are present in the old config but it doesn't look like any of them should affect this.

Accessing from the physical disc drive has never worked well on my machine. I don't think the emulation will drop down to 10% speed like it does on your machine but it certainly causes a considerable performance hit.
So I just create an image of the CD I want to use and mount with Daemon tools and that works very well.
