TVGA8900D SVM utility woes

Post by ppgrainbow »

I have a problem with the Set Video Modes utility for the emulated Trident TVGA 8900D on the AMI WinBIOS 486 machine (80486 DX2 66 MHz, 64 MB RAM) in PCem v9 r335. While most of the video modes work other video modes do not work correctly or even cause PCem to quit.

Example 1: When I select CGA mode, 40 x 25 text mode, this is what happens:
TVGA8900D CGA mode not working.png

To some extend, I had to hard reset to revert back to VGA mode.

Example 2: Although the TVGA 8900D emulated graphics card is capable of displaying high colour and true colour video modes with up to 1 MB of display memory, all of the modes in TVGA HiColor do not work correctly and end up displaying garbled text. In some video modes the display ends up stretched like the example when selecting 320 x 200 x 24-bit colour mode:

Example 3: Trying to select 80x25 HERC mode causes the Herc text mode to not display properly for a second, then PCem quits:

The SVM utility can be found in \TVGAUTIL\UTILITY and you can get the TVGA8900D drivers off of this page: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=257

You will need to run this under MS-DOS and test all of the video modes and confirm that there are issues with the TVGA8900D emulated graphics card. I sure hope that this issue gets fixed soon.

Here's the pclog.txt file and its hard to explain what caused PCem to quit when attempting to switch to 80x25 HERC mode using the TVGA8900D graphics card:

I'm sorry that I had to make a reply, but the forum won't allow me to post more than three attachments at one time.

I update to r354 of PCem, ran the SVM utility and I'm still getting the display corruption issue when selecting HiColour mode and no display at all when selecting CGA mode.

On the AMI486 33MHz machine, the Tseng ET4000's TVDIAG utility doesn't display CGA and MDA modes correctly when switching to other modes. I get this instead:
TLI ET4000 CGA display corruption.png

Only the VGA and EGA modes work correctly. The CGA and MDA modes also work correctly when using the Tseng ET4000 display driver and the TVDIAG utility under DOSBox. I'm wondering if these modes have been tested when using the ET4000 driver under MAME also.

These issues need to be fixed in PCem, because something is not right here.
