i7 or i9 for PCem?

Post by Slo2020 »

Should i buy i7-12700K or i9-12900K for PCem when it will be released? Do you think this CPU's will be enough for 400 MHz?

Dunno. Wait until someone else is stupid enough to buy them and can report back.

I only wanted to ask if i9 is better for this emulator compare to i7.

I doubt there'll be much of an increase of core speed between the two, so...

IPC is what really counts. More cores however do benefit the Voodoo emulation (especially now that you can use 4 per card, like 8 for a Voodoo2 SLI)

IPC's been improving only at a glacial pace in the past decade though (compared to 1996-2006 which were like at least 4 distinct computer eras). Getting a new good* CPU over any relatively recent good* CPU is a big financial risk regardless of hype (especially during a pandemic where minor CPU jumps aren't exactly a life dependency).

* not laptops, often the lowest common emulation-performance complaining denominator

I agree with leilei, I have an i5 9600k and I can make a pentium 2 300 mhz work discreetly, the cpu you mentioned will have a production process of 10 nm so they will have a higher ipc.

These two statements are unconnected. Silicon process does not directly affect IPC.

Anyone maybe have i7-9700K or 10700K to tell which CPU can emulate at 100%?

My i7 8700k can run every os from dos to win2k at 100% with any setup. But I use other programs to make this happen. First I launch pcem in a program called cpu cores, I got it from steam. I use a few programs in some of my guest os's. rain, cput throttle and few of my own tweaks I used to do back in the day. Past that some of the games you run can still drag down the % even tho v17 fixed a LOT of that noise. My ol lady has a i7 9700 She seems about the same speeds but without the need to use cpu core. but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt if she had it =p
