as of the latest version of pc-em,i have seen great improvements on the overall speed of most windows 95\98 3d games, especially 3dfx ones, though many dos ones still are as slow as molasses(duke nukem 3d just to make an example)
my current rig is
I5-4460 3.20 ghz
16 gb ram ddr3
windows 10 x64
geforce gtx 750
and while most of the games run ok,i have seen videos on youtube with rigs with an I7 with games such as jedi knight basically going at full speed
so i was wondering, since my mobo supports only socket lga 1150,and i have a chance to buy an I7 Intel I7 4790 3,6 Ghz,will the performance improve a lot,or there would be a barely noticeable improvement?
Will this cpu improve performance on pc-em?
Re: Will this cpu improve performance on pc-em?
I have a i7 4790k is there anything specific you need tested?
Re: Will this cpu improve performance on pc-em?
Cross the 4ghz mark with it and you should be sailing in the PMMX166 infinite territory at least. Self-modifying code (i.e. Eradicator) will still be very slow however
Re: Will this cpu improve performance on pc-em?
If you can, buy the K version, the 4790k. You can easily overclock it to 4.5 ghz as mineSolstar82 wrote: so i was wondering, since my mobo supports only socket lga 1150,and i have a chance to buy an I7 Intel I7 4790 3,6 Ghz,will the performance improve a lot,or there would be a barely noticeable improvement?
I can emulate the Pentium MMX 233 at 100%, however I didn't test Duke Nukem
Re: Will this cpu improve performance on pc-em?
Duke Nukem 3D works perfect on a Pentium MMX 166 with a 4790k @ 4.5
Re: Will this cpu improve performance on pc-em?
well as stated before games such as duke nukem, tekwar or even the first quakejznomoney wrote:I have a i7 4790k is there anything specific you need tested?
well here' s the thing:omarsis81 wrote:Duke Nukem 3D works perfect on a Pentium MMX 166 with a 4790k @ 4.5
duke nukem, tekwar and also the first quake runs perfectly fine...if the in-game resolution is set at 320x200,nothing more.
as soon as i ramp that up to 640x480,or even 320.240,like i did in quake, its a slowdown show.setting cycles to "infinite" smooths things up,and with this new version games are siginficatly faster than before(i tried Sonic R,and its perfectly playable, other games like street racer even recognized my usb joypad perfectly),but the sound become a choppy mess.
same for Descent 2,in 320x200, or at best 640x480 in cockpit mode is playable, anything bigger than that, its a slideshow
Re: Will this cpu improve performance on pc-em?
I dunno... in Quake I can play 360x480 nicely on MPMMX300Infinite S3 Trio64 at 100% fineSolstar82 wrote:f the in-game resolution is set at 320x200,nothing more.
Also using Scitech Display Doctor or UniVBE May or may not help. On a real PC though the linear framebuffer that is grants to some video cards (like the Chips & Tech series, which PCem does not emulate) is a nice boost. I don't recommend installing its Windows driver however
Alternatively there are a few S3-related optimization/vbe tools
S3SPDUP
S3VBE20
S3VBEFIX
