IBM PS/1 model 2121 help

Post by robertsig »

I'm trying to get the IBM PS/1 2121 386SX-16 to work. I believe I have the right ROM, the right HDD image and everything, but all I get is the Press F1 to continue and then an error loading operating system. I'm trying to duplicate the first PC I ever owned, the 2121-B82.

I'm not sure how PCEM needs to be configured, but the original HDD was an 80MB, IBM part# 92F9943. This coincides with a Maxtor 7080AI.
Settings - http://www.computerhope.com/hdmaxtor.htm.
Does PCEM require you to match the original BIOS settings perfectly? Does anyone have something that works? Thanks.

I was trying to set that up too, but never finished it. A glance at this thread: http://www.vcfed.org/forum/showthread.p ... sx-machine suggests getting a file from this site: http://greyghost.mooo.com/pccbbs/ps1/ and that's about as far as I've gotten. Hopefully you'll have better luck! :D

And in typical Internet fashion, I got it working perfectly right after I posted this. Ugh.

This is so cool!

Use Bochs/Linux/DosBOX to create a HDD the PS/1 bios recognizes - I used 80Mb with 981/10/7 for CHS since that was my model.
Set the parameters in PCEM appropriately. 386SX/16 for example.
Get the right fc8000.bin rom
Google "IBM PS/1 Resource page" (Alternatively, you can just use that IBMulator too, but I only have 32-bit Windows)
Download diskettes for the software, boot the DOS disk first to format HDD image with DOS 4.01
Then download ZIP file of the rest of the software and inject it with Winimage. It's easier than loading a bunch of virtual disks.
Profit

I still can't get past pressing F1 when it starts, but it works after that. Perhaps the next version of PCEM will fix that.

Thanks! I was able to set up a 2121 (not sure how accurate) and boot it into DOS -but never figured out how to get past having to press F1. TY for the writeup :)

Much like the 2011 (kinda), you need an already bootable DOS HDD to configure the machine's internals like floppy boot, etc.
