Audio cracking\stuttering on win 98

Postby Solstar82 » Thu 27 Jul, 2017 7:15 am

using my same config as always..

download/file.php?id=852

I noticed that the audio is stuttering\crackling basically all the time.It has been like this since forever, but i only thought about writing it now.

basically, any game , or just simply browsing the folders inside windows, will produce some audio lag or stuttering or in some cases a sudden cut of the audio.

Did you try by changing the buffer in the PCem options?

Ah, interesting .. I discovered something similar when I was testing my adlib sound player for DOS which uses an interrupt (PCem v12 for Linux)

.. everything wents fine, when choosing low end machines in PCem up to 486DX40.. but when setting the machine to something like Pentium Overdrive the sound starts to stutter .. and a lot of benchmarks get confused like Checkit 3.0 .. something with the PIT ?

I also noticed that the - don't know how to name it - "load display" is not at 100% like the other machines but varies betwenn 20 % - 100 % ..

- TheMechanist: That's why sound stutters, the sound stuttering when the emulator's performance % goes below 100%, is by design.

oh, seems I misunderstood the percentage value, thought it shows how the emulated cpu is occupied .. then it's clear ..

I'm afraid that option is only available in the latest build revisions that you have to manually compile yourself.

No, PCem mainstream.
You need to compile it yourself or waint until a next official release (I believe it is going to be late this year according to Sarah)

From what I understand here, as long as the emulated pc runs at 100%, the sound stuttering issue will not show up, am I correct? If so, then the next pc I buy should be powerful enough to run emulated PCs at 100%. May I ask if there is a best CPU on the market today for PCem?

I think we will all shudder if the answer is an i9.

I find these new developments in PCem features very fascinating, especially if they can help us avoid having to buy the best CPU on the market.

No, i9 won't be the best buy.
For what I understand, PCem doesn't benefit with more than 3 cores, so I'd target the best performing 4-core processor.
First, I would wait until Coffe Lake launches, but if you want to buy something TODAY, I'd go with the 7600K or 7700k

- omarsis81: I personally recommend Haswell since I heard it still has the best single-core performance.

I looked at this chart:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html
What I heard about the 7700K is that Intel itself discourages overclocking as it overheats, but the performance is the best. But then again, Coffe Lake is around the corner, probably next week of end of month
