Sharp PC-4521 in PCem?

Post by gen_angry »

Hello,

I am looking to re-create my very first PC for nostalgia, the Sharp PC-4521. I spent many days as an 8-10 yr old typing up basic "Hello World"-type programs in Qbasic and messing around with it, seeing what things did.

Just have a question: Is there a supported 'setup' that emulates this machine by any chance (including the blue monochrome screen)? If not in v12, than maybe in v13 (or the latest branch)?

https://thex86generation.wordpress.com/ ... 4500-4502/ specs of the original machine. (I had the PC4521, remember that there was a 20mb hard-drive)

Thank you. :)

If that notebook has a Nec V40 processor, it is not emulated...
And by looking at this, it doesn't seem to be around the corner

Sure that the Sharp PC-4521 has NEC V40 processor. Sadly it is not emulated.

That's unfortunate, maybe some day in the future than.

Thank you both for your responses. :)

I do think many manufacturers used NEC Vxx series mainly because them offered better performance at similar or even lower costs than the Intel 8088/8086/80186
I don't expect to see anything using 8080 (8 bit) code on a XT clone, 8088/8086/80286 emulation should do the job for most BIOS and all PC/XT programs will run flawlessly as with a NEC Vxx, only performance will differ.
This is not a perfect solution, but it can help to emulate the remaining parts of some systems and making them ready for the availability of NEC emulation.

 For blue monitor a small modification of the already available patch for green/amber/grayscale must be enough https://pcem-emulator.co.uk/phpBB3/view ... en+monitor

If you can do some programming there's no reason to not give it a chance... if not consider that I knew almost nothing about programming in c/c++ but I made a partially working systems: https://pcem-emulator.co.uk/phpBB3/view ... ?f=3&t=849
Mostly I did it by copying and pasting code from other systems  and those aren't 100% done but are a start point for somebody with more knowledges on computing and programming.
My thoughts are that must be more enthusiasts of those machines out there, and even if each one can only improve them a little those machines will get completed later or sooner... ;)

What about implementing Sharp PC 7221. According PC-Magazine from march 1988 on page 123 says the are similar, both of the had the monochrome blue screen and the same memory limit of 1.6 MB.
Except the PC 7221 has a 80286 cpu running at 6,8 or 10 mhz, which may be easier to emulate. The biggest difference between the is the PC 4521 supports 640kb of conventional and 1 MB as EMS memory while the 7221 support that MB of memory as XMS (The circle that says "LIM EMS support" is not marked)
