Which CD-ROM driver do you use ?

Post by karr »

hi

which cd rom driver do you use with pcem ?

in the past i used the compo of
mscdex + videcdd.sys
worked good but i had the same bugs as Seth

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3090
"litte big adventure won't copy speech files and crash

after i changed to shsucdx + videcdd.sys the bug is gone but cd rom drive is now "a bit" slower compared to mscdex.

which cd rom driver combination do you use ?

Yeah, oakcdrom.sys and mscdex seems like the most compatible combo. A lot more games from my list work now perfect. Thanks! :)

would be interesting to know which driver SarahWalker recommends.
here the drivers i tried

vide-cdd.sys (v2.14 2.15 and 2.14a with native ide mode) from Acer have the bug with litte big adventure.

qcdrom.sys (from shuscdx dev) and update xdvd2.sys (from 2019-04-21) both require even less memory compared to vide-cdd.sys
but both have audio cd problems: 7th guest work, sam & max don't. :-(

oakcdrom.sys (Oak OTI 91X Rev: D91XV352) requires a lot memory

LG/ Goldstar 1.25 (gcdrom.sys)

Oak OTI-011 CD-ROM device driver Rev D011V200 (d011v200.sys)

atm i use this driver:
Oak OTI-011 Rev D011V110 (d011v110.sys)

here the list of free conventional memory
with dos 6.22, ctmouse driver and sb awe32 without memmaker or other memory manager

no cd rom driver:
569 K

vide-cdd.sys (Acer)
537 K

qcdrom.sys
539 K

xdvd2.sys
540 k

oakcdrom.sys (OTI 91X)
507 K

gcdrom.sys (LG/Goldstar 1.25)
515 K

d011v200.sys (OTI-011 Rev D011V200)
516 K

d011v110.sys (OTI-011 Rev D011V110)
522 K

In my period setup (1994) I used an OTI-011 driver with MSCDEX in DOS 6.22, but this seems to be regressed in v15 on some AMI boards, so I've bumped that up to an anachronistic Win95 mscdex+oakcdrom driver.

If I could, i'd be using that old crusty Tottori Sanyo Electric driver as that's what my 4X Mitsumi came with.

just tested a genric mitsumi driver

mtmcdai.sys
531 K but doesn't work with sam n max cd audio

here is a "small list"
http://www.cdrom-drivers.com
there are 274 drivers for mitsumi alone and 110 mitsumi drivers for non windows.

guess there are thousands of drivers.
may be there is another small driver like vide-cdd.sys which will work for both lba and audio cds. :-)

oakcdrom.sys seems also to have a few problems....

i tried to play Inherit the earth cd
the cd is in mds/mdf format which cannot be mounted by pcem so i used wincdemu on host system to do this.

with oakcdrom.sys i get this error message trying to read the cd:
"cdr103 cdrom not high sierra or iso-9660 format"
(this happens with all cds mounted on host system)

with videcdd.sys cd works fine
guess i stick with videcdd.sys + mscdex (only lba does not work properly but here speech files can be copied manually)

shsucdx (and shcdx33f) have some probs as well for e.g. gunship 2000 won't install with it
(a 9 year old problem has not been fixed... :-) )
