Best machine settings for Q2Dos?

Post by ruthan »

Here is post that Q2DOS is working with PCem from its author:
https://pcem-emulator.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=2114#p2114

But i struggle make its working with PCem 15, first loading is taking 2-3 minutes and menu is very, very slow.. gameplay is good enough, but loading takes forever and there are also some disk related freezes..

So if someone has better experience pleas share you PCem machine configs.

Are you emulating a fast enough machine? I have it running on a emulated 486 with Pentium OverDrive/83 and 65mb memory. also the poster in that thread is using pcem's voodoo capabilities. Something I didn't test.

Hmm, i tried everything from P200 - to K6-III 500 MHz (i dont have enough horsepower for it, but i tried it, anyway.), sweet stop for my machine is somewhere AMD K6-2 266 MHz - here im still getting 100% of emulation speed - im running it on Core i7 4770S, DDR3 2133.

Original Quake 2 system reqruirements for Windows are these:

Minimum system requirements:
CPU: Pentium 90
RAM (memory):16 MB
Videocard: 1 MB
Sound card: compatible with SoundBlaster 8 bit
Space on disk: 25 MB
OS: Windows 95 + DirectX 5.0

Recommended system requirements:
CPU: Pentium 133
RAM (memory): 24 MB
Videocard: 2 MB + 3Dfx
Sound card: compatible with SoundBlaster 16 bit
Space on disk: 400 MB
OS: Windows NT 4.0 + Service Pack 3

Directly in Q2DOS readme is this:
Pentium 1. At least a 200MHz to play it at ~20-30fps.
* At least 48 MB RAM. More for larger mods.

And its for official version, i guess that Dos unofficial version probably would be have higher requirements.. because of amount of time for optimizations.

I tried Voodoo version too, its running but im getting for Voodoo 13 FPS 1, nad for Voodoo 2 17-20 FPS.. but i main problem.. is very slow menu and slimer IO.. I tried Standard IDe and IDE XTIDE.. lots of memory manager mods etc. Are using FAT16 or FAT32 file system? What about Dos - im on 7.1?

Are you using music from CD or in *.ogg files? Not music at all, it could have performance impact too.

So i its strange that its working on 486 with Pentium override good.. unless some bugs and misconfigurations are in the play.

I test whole batch of Dosbox, Wmware, Virtualbox and QEMU 4.2 DOS machine on some real HW.. and only PCem its only one with these very long loading times and very slow menu, so something is not right, i even tried same disc images with Virtualbox so its not about some DOS 7 configuration mistake.
