Museum Madness - FM Synth in DOS sound lag, despite it being solid 100%

Post by PentiumMMX »

when i play Museum Madness, i get horrible sound lag, on both nuked and Dosbox OPL, no matter what sound card i use, no matter what system i use, lag, lag, and more lag. it's unlistenable. i tried everything under the sun to fix the lag issue, nothing. I have a Ryzen 5 2600, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1060, Windows 10.

Could you provide a recording of the 'sound lag' please?

Also, Museum Madness sounds like the most totally radical game ever.

That link requires access. Wouldn't be easier to upload to youtube as everybody does?

I can reproduce this, it's not a drop in performance, it seems like a real bug.

I was also talking about that issue in the 86Box discord.

It is frowned upon talking about 86Box here, that's another project

I wonder if this is the same bug as the one I've encountered that causes MIDI files (any at all) to stutter when played through the FM synthesizer. Judging by the description of the commit, I wouldn't be surprised if it is.

I think this should also fix frequent sound (midi/speech) stuttering in Return to Zork and The Riddle of Master Lu when running in Windows 95. The solution which worked on my end was to exit Windows 95 and run both games from DOS directly.

I have just tested v17, and the MIDI stuttering issue has indeed been fixed!
