Unable to get a NIC to work in a Tandy VM due to IRQ unavailability (it seems), thought that that might be a decent workaround, since it doesn't consume any additional resources.
I can't find much technical documentation on the Xircom devices though, much less any existing emulation examples, so that might be a fair amount of work to reverse engineer.

I'd be interested in this because I have the real thing somewhere (unless it's another model), but actually implementing it would be very low on my list of priorities, and unfortunately nobody else seems to be interested

serial or parallel null modem cables would also work and I bet it is easier to emulate

Serial definitely, it's simpler and it's been done many times before. I saw your thread about that and might even try implementing it myself sometime.
