Tandy Sound Emulation
Tandy Sound Emulation
Is there a way to set tandy sound with the sound card selection. I believe that the sound emulated in tandy mode is the sound that a IBM PCjr would produce and not what a true tandy would. I use to own a tandy 1000hx and the sound produced when running maniac mansion is off. You can see the difference on this website http://nerdlypleasures.blogspot.com/201 ... -chip.html

Re: Tandy Sound Emulation
I have already implemented the different behaviour (as of revision 412) and this will be part of the v11 release.
Re: Tandy Sound Emulation
Thanks for the reply TomWalker. Is there anyway to change the mode to tandy sound if I built from current source? As always I appreciate the work you do on this emulator.

You'll get the SN76496 behaviour from the PCjr and Tandy 1000, and the NCR8496 behaviour from the 1000HX and 1000SL/2.
Re: Tandy Sound Emulation
Weird. No matter which version of tandy I select the sound produced is still wrong. Is it just me lolTomWalker wrote:You'll get the SN76496 behaviour from the PCjr and Tandy 1000, and the NCR8496 behaviour from the 1000HX and 1000SL/2.

I tested my maniac binaries with dosbox and it sounds proper there.

Hmm, just tried Maniac Mansion with rev 414, with Tandy 1000 HX selected, and it sounds fine to me...
Does it sound the same on all Tandy models, or is it wrong in different ways?

PCjr's 76496 should sound weird with the Maniac Mansion noise track.
Tandy 1000 uses same chip as PCjr.
Later Tandy models past the 1000 should use a NCR8496, which was designed for Maniac Mansion's Tandy noise track.

I had a tandy 1000hx and the sound was different than the IBM PCjr in maniac mansion.

I mean on the Tandy models in the emulator, not real machines.
Re: Tandy Sound Emulation
This is what it sounds like under PCem with any tandy model selected https://www.dropbox.com/s/966u46uhmaabbd4/pcem.mp3?dl=0
This is what it sounds like under DOSBox https://www.dropbox.com/s/kpeniv5qtnan6 ... x.mp3?dl=0
The way it sounds under dosbox is the way I remember it sounding on my old Tandy 1000hx.

Re: Tandy Sound Emulation
Okay, looks like the difference is that you're running the original version of Maniac Mansion, and I've been running the enhanced version. The two appear to have different sound code, and the original is still broken on PCem. I will look into this.

Okay, try rev 415.
