Best machine/graphic card/setting for Windows 95 emulation?

Post by DarkBolo »

Can someone tell me the best machine/gfs card and setting for emulating Windows 95 in PCem?
I want to play some 2d win95 games.
Also, what kind of PC do I need to handle them well?
Thanks in advance.

For Windows 95 games, use the Award 430VX PCI machine and either the S3 ViRGE/DX or ATI Graphics Pro Turbo card. Host machine should be something like a Core i3 at 3 GHz at the minimum, that should get you something like Pentium 75/90 speeds in most 2D games.

It might be ATi Mach64. I tried some 2D RPG games on v10.1 before and Mach64 performs better than S3 Trio64. And S3 ViRGE was the poorest.
On v10.1, the blitter isn't in a dedicate thread but on v11 it is. So the 2D games should run faster.

Actually, my host is an Ivy Bridge i3 laptop at 2.4GHz... So you'd better have a try first.
It is a game in 1999, requiring DirectX 6... and runs well on my host.

Is there a difference in system requirements, for a host, of a Windows 98 vs Windows 95 installation? Because I tried win98 and I had trouble playing Captain Claw, I got 65-78% of speed in game.
Also do I need to install drivers manually?(sound, gfx, directx etc)

That game I played requires Win95 and Pentium 166, using DirectDraw.

There shouldn't be any difference in speed between a game on Windows 95 and Windows 98 on PCem. One tip if you're having performance problems is to try switching between DirectDraw and Direct3D output, if you haven't tried this already; often one will be noticeably quicker than the other.

You don't say exactly what 'Dual Core 3.0' is, but it should probably be fine.

You will need to install drivers manually, it's just like a real Windows 9x machine in that respect.

For the original release of Windows 95 (or Windows 95 OSR1), I prefer the SIS496 machine with 8 MB or 16 MB RAM and Windows 95 OSR2 for the Award VX430 machine with 16 MB or even 32 MB RAM. I also recommend a 1 GB or 2 GB hard disk image and a CD-ROM. :D
