Actually, this applies to closed software developers as well...

I've been trying the latest dev build for windows but its telling me that no roms are present.
I've been using the same roms I've been using for PC Em v17 which worked just fine.
I also tried copying it to appdata/local/pcem/roms and appdata/roaming/pcem/roms but not even sure if the emulator looks for a folder there..

am I'm missing something?

The new path is:

Code: Select all

%HOMEPATH%\.pcem

In my experience the "no ROMs present' error can be fixed by deleting the contents of your nvr subfolder within your PCem folder. If your ROMs are all in the right place then this should work. It did with PCem v17 on Windows 11.

Yeah.. except it does not when it's commercial software paid for with support and SLAs in place...

The new path is:

Code: Select all

%HOMEPATH%\.pcem
I do plan on resolving this in if it detects a .pcem folder with the EXE, it will use that instead of the home folder. Basically gives it portable mode.
If you dont add that folder, it will default to %HOMEPATH%\.pcem

I know that change was not a well received one, but I wanted parity with the Linux version.

The new version will be available on February 30th.... Until then, stop asking for a release day...

Which commit introduced this change? I cannot find it via Github search.

Open source developers do NOT have to:
• Make your issue a priority, just because you say so.
• Merge patches, just because someone sent them.
• Give you any sort of "timetable", or explanation for why it's "taking too long".

Check your entitlement. Nobody owes you anything.

Concerning v18, the obvious has been said. Open-source etiquette etc etc.

However, and this might be a bit controversial, but I think people asking about a new version is justified. Mainly because of the standards and expectations that Sarah has set with PCem after the past several years. She released a version literally every year since the project's inception, sometimes two versions in one year. Not to mention she would give semi-regular updates towards the next version as well.

So all of a sudden, when there's a hiatus in the project or some sort of change in scenery, it can come as a surprise. Especially because up until December 2021, nobody here knew who Michael was.

He is obviously a different person, working in a new-ish role, developing within his own guidelines, on a project that is open-source. But any inquiries is not surprising.

I have not used PCem for a while now, but I have been very impressed with the program, and the project. The PCem devs, Michael, Sarah, leilei, and the others, have done a wonderful job making PCem one of the best programs out there. I am also thankful that this forum is so well run and that we can get useful advice here on PCem matters.

As the holidays approach, I will enjoy using PCem again, whether it is v13.1 or v17.

As it was already mentioned: February 30th. It will bring Pentium 4 and GeForce 6 emulation.

LOL, yes why stop there how about Core 2 Duo support!

But for reals, I am the only developer, and also have other projects I am working on. It's on my list, but I got some major projects that are monetary based, so unless you going to pay me to develop PCem lol.

I am a big fan of the PCem emulator, and big thanks to Sarah and Michael for putting so much effort on building the best version of it possible. I would like to know that when pcem v18 version is released, would the new emulator add multiple cpu core support, as well as to eliminate the mouse timing lag which existed in v17? I dont have a very fast CPU (intel i7 8700), so an multi threaded implementation for v18 seems to be a possible way to achieve 100% speed consistently for the pentium 2 450mhz emulation, that would be SWEET.

I hope that the new PCem V18 gets released this year with new and fast early 2000s graphics?

....there's so many other gaps to cover before to even think of getting to "early 2000". PCem isn't obligated to go through the course of Moore's Law.

Besides, "early 2000" is already here. The Cyrix III. The K6-3. SBPCI 128. The Voodoo3s that went on clearance. To make it more of the reality, we'd need Rage XL to make those popular eMachines and 'internet PCs' that were sold in the dotcom boom (the current Banshee emulation is already a miles ahead stopgap for this!). It doesn't have to be "hobbyist emulator maker, i am entitled to have Geforce256 and Voodoo5 and Rage128 emulation within the next 12 months, for free"

Yeah, he's constantly spamming here. I actually wanted to go with a really harsh approach two posts ago but then I realized it would probably trigger the same question one more time (and it probably would in any case).

He's not spamming because he is waiting patiently is the waiting for the new version is currently taking a while to develop?
