Re: PCem v18 News (Was v17 Notice)
I guess tk421 choose a poor example of a game from that era to make his point. There are other games from that era that require a machine faster than PCem, and are not compatible with contemporary Windows, and are worth playing. Fans of those games would look to alternatives, a physical retro PC fr...

Re: PCem v18 News (Was v17 Notice)
I really hope the 13th gen Intel laptop CPUs can do the job. Unreal Tournament (1999) is always fun to play, but it would be nice to get it running at 100% in PCem. VMWare runs the game fine, but PCem is so cool. Just curious why would one want to use PCem for this game, aside cool ? It does run na...

Re: How to Detect PCem Programmatically?
Why not invert the question? Try to detect the others by intrinsic or otherwise unique devices/features, and if it's none of them it has to be PCem. Unfortunately, that won't work, at least not reliably. I can't even tell automatically if I'm running in a VM or not (I boot straight to DOS on the sa...

Re: Doubts about PCEM possibilities with COM ports
Not sure if PCem is what you should aim for, since you seem to mix up parallel (LPT) and serial (COM). I have used physical COM ports with vanilla DosBox to quite a degree of success, regardless if the host bus was ISA, PCI, PCIe or USB. https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Configuration:SerialPort If you th...

Re: Change of resolution with Voodoo 2 card + Pentium III emulation ?!
also note the post dates. Blade of Darkness DOES work on PCem v17's V3 emulation fwiw. Yeah, noticed for both. 16 bpp V3 vs. 32 bpp dgVoodoo2 ;) Yet PCem doesn't have to hide, of course. At least I am dedicated enough though to try getting games playable on native prior PCem or VM, for reasons like...

Re: Change of resolution with Voodoo 2 card + Pentium III emulation ?!
I don't think Blade of Darkness ever supported the Voodoo2. It has selectors dedicated to Glide for V1+V2, D3D for V1+V2, and D3D for V3+Banshee. I say that because this game does not work under Windows 7 or 10 unfortunately... thank you greetings ! Maybe not trying hard enough ;) Aside the game be...

Thank you! As for Voodoo 3 3000, what could be recommended settings? There's something called Voodoo type (Voodoo Graphics, Obsidian SB50 + Amethyst (2 TMUs) or Voodoo 2). Then there's framebuffer memory, texture memory, render threads, bilinear filtering, screen filter, SLI, recompiler, etc. A bit...

Understood.
FIC VA-503+
K6-III as fast as your host CPU can do without noticable drops
3DFX Voodoo 3 3000
Sound Blaster PCI128
128 or 256 MB RAM
Win98SE
That's quite comparable with real hardware, e.g. in this thread: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=36407

Re: Need suggestions: Best Win98 guest that can run DX9
I would not recommend to use PCem for either at all. I would use VMWare Player instead. Max Payne: Officially supports Win2k and is known to run under WinXP, although unsupported under latter. Half-Life: Although the release version requires Win9x, it does run on WinXP with the latest offline patch,...

Re: Personal Deskmate 2 for Tandy 1000hx
IMHO it doesn't matter for the copyright status whether they monetarize it or not. They don't plan to monetarize I guess because their trademark was canceled in 2006. But Tandy still exists: RadioShack. Hence the software is still part of their copyrighted assets, even if they wouldn't have the sour...

Translations should be well thought of if you really want to go down that road. It's not just the code changes to implement some kind of language file import. Re: What computer processor to emulate pentium mmx and up with PCem well?
There's still that Direct3D 6-7 primary device gap that VM software can't touch. Also as for VirtualBox, they're retiring the video device that brings 2K/XP OpenGL passthrough pretty soon. (the other newer devices don't have a 2K/XP guest additions driver (yet?)) Just a side note: It's possible sur...

Re: Using vintage email clients
Indeed. You'll never solve this problem within Win9x, no matter how you turn it. You need some intermediate system with TLSv1.2 which acts as an IMAP or SMTP/POP3 proxy/relay and/or cache, regardless if it's WinXP, *nix or something else. Data flow would roughly look like this: E-mail provider <---I...

Re: Using vintage email clients
Those will likely never get a connection nowadays due to lack of TLSv1.2 support. TLSv.1.0, SSLv3.0 and older are outdated and usually no longer available. Most providers have also removed abilities for unencrypted connections alltogether. You can try to change your POP3/IMAP/SMTP settings to SSL/TL...

Re: Possiblity of implementing cache emulation
I think perfect cache emulation is something we all like to have with PCem Why? There is no speed gain from it. On a physical computer speed gain with cache arises from the fact that cache memory is several orders of magnitute faster than DRAM. In PCem all emulation is taking place in it's host DRA...
