Re: Emulating p3 with winxp?
Truthfully, for P4 level 'xp emulation' - you're better off getting yourself an actual Pentium 4 S478/LGA775 rig for dirt cheap. I've seen them as low as $20 CAD for a board, CPU, and RAM on ebay. Throw in a cheap $10 Geforce 6200, visit a computer recyclers for a cheap/free HD + case + PSU and you'...

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: MichaelJManley taking over as PCem maintainer
Oh this place is back? Nice. :) Hello everyone! As Sarah mentioned I will be taking over the development of PCem. Everyone feel free to give any ideas for any future ideas and I will see if they are feasible. I will start going though some refactoring to get it ready for a plugin interface and any b...

Lol, the entitlement... It's likely Sarah has more shit going on in her life atm than immediately working on a bug that can be easily worked around. This isn't some company's software with deadlines, this is a personal project for free software that takes contributions. There's no urgency or 'schedu...

Re: AMD Ryzen 5000 series.
That's pretty awesome EluanCM. How does K6-2 performance compare with Pentium II for you? Is there a big drop in the highest attainable emulated clockspeed when you switch over to P-II? Also, relevant to that "Skylake-era IPC stagnation" mentioned upthread: in a couple of months, Intel wi...

Re: Windows 98SE Freezes on Attempting to Reboot
Had the same issue myself while recording a few dual boot tutorials. The slot 1 one works fine about 50% of the time for me though (the other 50% is the issue described above). The FIC board does it every time with a clean install. Using the K6-2 300, FIC board, 128MB RAM, S3 VIRGE DX, AWE32, 10gb H...

Re: Future sound card musings
On the SBLive emulation, should it ever happen, would it also emulate the performance penalties? Long ago my system had a Live 5.1 and I didn't realize this was a bottlenecking card until I switched to onboard audio some motherboards later. Maybe it's why the PCem k6/2 emulation feels unusually fas...

Re: Future sound card musings
The AWE64 had a few different models. The 'standard/original' with 1MB soundfont RAM, a 'Value' with 512kb, and a Gold with 4MB. AFAIK, one of the big things about the AWE64 is that they fixed the hanging note bug. There's a good writeup here on the main differences between all of the 32/64 cards an...

Re: anyone interesting in doing a PCem driver collection?
If I did a driver project, it'd be just one big color-coded table (Device/OS) with references to official filenames and notes of out-of-box and DirectX support and the like. No need to repack from that. That'd be pretty cool, a documentation with 'known working' filenames, sizes, hashs with additio...

Re: anyone interesting in doing a PCem driver collection?
Searching and downloading the driver without owning the hardware is technically 'illegal', it's just not enforced (nor can it be, really - doesn't mean some of these greedy ass companies haven't tried). I disagree with this statement. Unlike ROMS, firmware and such, drivers are usually made publicl...

Re: anyone interesting in doing a PCem driver collection?
See the thing is: when you own the hardware itself, you've paid a company for the use of that hardware. Downloading the drivers comes with the hardware as it is required for it to work. When you use the BIOS dump or drivers within PCem, if you own the hardware - you're basically expressing your righ...

Committed at 2ad5b83. I'm leaving this thread where it is in an attempt to remind me that we need to update for v17 and convert to HTML or similar before the release. You're missing "TESTED.md" from the zip - it's the 'software tested' list. If you wanted to scrap that, I can kill the par...

Sorry, been meaning to reply to this for a while now! In general I think this looks okay. I'm not familiar with this kind of markup though, can it be processed to a plain text file for the binary release? AMD Ryzen 5000 series.
From what the presentation shows, they managed to hit an insane 630+ score on Cinebench single thread - which is incredible. Of course this is all carefully crafted PR puffery but it's pretty much the only bit we've got atm. If it's true, it'd be the first serious step above the Skylake-ish IPC 'sta...

Re: Win98SE and 137GB limit
I have only one Win98se machine with a 160GB drive and the way i've dealt with that is use XFDISK to reserve a primary NTFS partition at the end for Windows XP (where it'll work), and have an extended partition on the gap before that and the other two primaries at the beginning (Win98/2K, WinME) so...

Re: Future graphics card emulation
I'm using the original 9000 in my current '98 rig, and honestly, it is extremely compatible with most games I throw at it from the Win9x era. Not too new for those late DOS/early Win95 games, but not too old for those late Win98/early WinXP games. Yea, those things shred. The whole 9000 series line...

Re: Future graphics card emulation
The 9000 falls into the 'haha no' unlikelyness for being too fast for today's CPUs to emulate decently though (even if it's a watered down 8500 and not actually part of the nVidia-busting R300 line) There probably isn't a lot in that era which could be reasonably emulated for performance reasons, t...

So, this isn't a PCem related question technically but I'm not sure where else to ask. It could be a question at some point though if someone actually tried doing it and some of y'all have an insane amount of knowledge on the details of stuff so... anyways. I built a P4 system for late Win98 games (...

Re: Confirmed CPUs that emulate the Pentium MMX 233 without stuttering
What did you run within the machine? Try Puyo Puyo 2, that one made my old 6700K stutter a bit. I would imagine that all them would have issues as well. Even running with Voodoo1 3D accelerators doesn't affect the emulation speed. It shouldn't, Voodoo emulation is on a separate thread than the CPU.

It *might* be possible to do a (forbidden, unsupported) DOSBox 0.74 Win95 guest to run DOSBox 0.74 with that emulator in there within a PCem Win98 guest. (Maybe, at the highest K6 you can run) There's also the old "dosemu" to consider on the Linux guest side. oh how I don't miss those old...

Re: Most affordable CPU to emulate the most powerful CPU without stutter?
I think Voodoo2 is possible to emulate without stuttering. My GPU is a XFX AMD Radeon RX 560 2GB. But most likely you're saying that Voodoo2 runs on a host CPU. The Voodoo2 requires so much CPU muscle within the scope of PCem that you're essentially bandwidth starving it. A 233MMX is way too small ...

Re: Most affordable CPU to emulate the most powerful CPU without stutter?
If all you want to do is PCem, you should be fine with a 9th or 10th gen Intel. I had no problems doing 233 at full speed with my old 6700K at stock and the newer intels have much higher clockspeed. AMD Ryzen is also a decent option as well but they aren't as fast as PCem due to their lower clock sp...
