Re: CD-DA / Redbook audio not working in DOS
Then I don't know, I've little idea of how audio is extracted from data+audio CDs, but I remember about 15 years ago I was trying to set up an old 486 to use for old games and one game was missing a few bytes of conventional memory if it had the driver loaded from the CD drive, searching through dri...

Re: CD-DA / Redbook audio not working in DOS
I've searched through my CD games and found one with audio tracks that works on Windows and MS-DOS, on Windows 95 it had sound but on DOS it didn't, even with the DOS drivers installed. The problem was that the volume of the CD seems to be at minimum by default in the DOS drivers, I had to use the M...

Re: Can't boot XT from Hard Drive.
From experience I know that when the PS/2 model 70 "gets angry" (bad CMOS settings or the like) it only supports floppy disks with the PC-DOS boot sector, although the XT does not have a CMOS it may expect to find a boot sector or partition table in a specific format, and maybe not all ver...

Re: Can't boot XT from Hard Drive.
Inside PCem using the DTC5150X controller BIOS commands is useless, at most it will delete the contents of the drive but nothing else, formatting the drive at low level is useless as PCem ignores those commands, if you want to split a single drive into two logical drives you must do it with FDISK. I...

Re: Can't boot XT from Hard Drive.
I suspect some of those limits were not always real, it just had to be the largest hard drive size that existed when those operating systems versions came out, I remember MS-DOS 2.something shipped with the Sinclair PC200 did a proper install on another computer with a 40MB Conner CP3044 drive.

Re: Can't boot XT from Hard Drive.
Multi-DOS Common Boot :?: Are you using a bootloader? because it may use 286 instructions. Otherwise everything seems correct, it works for me with the same settings and hard drive images of the same size, I "fdisked" and formatted the hard drive using an MS-DOS 6.22 boot disk and then boo...

If you had that exact line in AUTOEXEC.BAT rem - By Windows Setup - LH C:\Windows\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:CDROM then the Windows setup has moved LH C:\Windows\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:CDROM to a file called C:\WINDOWS\DOSSTART.BAT which is executed when you exit to DOS from the Windows 95/98 Start menu a...

If you're in a fullscreen program you can click alt+tab once to get back to the Windows 98 desktop inside PCem, on your real computer Windows will also switch from PCem to any other window but you can use the mouse to return to PCem, then inside PCem you can use the mouse again to return to the full...

 To remove all devices from device manager at once and without having to reboot a bunch of times use the registry editor to go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ And delete the "enum" subkey, then if you reopen the device manager it will be empty, and after rebooting the machine (using the star...

Re: CD-ROM drive only partially works - unsure if Win98 or PCem bug
Windows 95 sometimes gets stuck in MS-DOS Compatibility mode even after all the problems are fixed, to get rid of it open the registry editor (regedit.exe) and navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS An then in the right pane right click on the "NoIDE&...

[Suggestion] A dedicated file extension for PCem configuration files
I would find it handy to have a dedicated file extension for PCem configuration files, so that one can run/configure a machine directly by double clicking/right clicking/etc on the configuration file, without having to use the command line. And to keep things simple I think the .pcem file extension ...

That error CDR101 can happen (at least) with the Adaptec SCSI CD-ROM driver ASPICD.SYS MSCDEX recognizes the drive and assigns it a drive letter, but cannot read anything from it and displays the message CDR101: Not ready reading drive D ("D" or whatever drive letter corresponds to the CD-...

It won't run on Windows 98 because it was coded for newer operating systems (XP and later) with more functions in the kernel, user interface and so on.

Re: PCEM stopped working correctly
Try going to the nvr subfolder in the PCem folder and deleting the nvr file with a name resembling your configuration name and emulated machine name, that file stores the motherboard configurations and can get corrupted. For example if your configuration name is "MS-DOS 6.22" and the machi...
