Re: Cat amongst the pigeons

PC emulation is quite demanding. You could try a Pentium 60 or 66 (Socket 4), or maybe a P 75.

If it still drops below 100%, you could try something like Dosbox-X, although installing windows in that is not as straightforward. You could also try a virtualizor like VMware or Virtualbox.

Re: OPL/FM synth volume

Didn't realize it controls both. Really a bad design on creative's part to combine them, since I'd constantly have to adjust the volume when switching between MIDI and FM.

Re: OPL/FM synth volume

I haven't seen a specific FM volume slider with Sound Blaster tools. Maybe I'm using the wrong one. Can you post a screenshot? As for adlib, it doesn't have a tool. IINM on a real card there is a physical volume knob on the card itself. PCem's sound menu is of no use to me since it affects all sounds.

OPL/FM synth volume

On my setups, FM synth volume is very low, compared to digital and MIDI. I haven't tested all cards, but it's the case with adlib and Sound Blaster cards. There doesn't seem to be a volume control for it.

Has anyone experienced this?

Re: PCem windows 95 not detecting CD for certain games

Also intrigued by your suggestion about mounting the CD in the host system. For some reason when I do so (either with the native Windows 10 iso mounting capability or with Daemon tools) I don't see an option in PCem to access the virtual CD drive (see screenshot below), and the image is definitely ...

Re: PCem windows 95 not detecting CD for certain games

1. Do not use ISO format for CD images. Some CD-check based protections scan the structure of the CD, which ISO doesn't provide. Use the BIN/CUE format. Also, with ISO, you will not have game music if the game's CD has audio tracks, which X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter does. By the way, when loading the ima...

Re: PCem Output to CRT

As harrison pointed out, you'd have to check where the mismatch is happening. There are three places: 1. The refresh rate set by the game itself. Some games force a specific value or allow it to be set to a specific one. 2. The refresh rate of the emulated monitor set in the monitor settings. You ca...

Whatever FDD you select in PCem, make sure it's set to the same in the BIOS too.

Are you using DOS? Maybe try windows 9x.

Re: why ryzen5 1200 simulate Win98 sound suttering?

Any reason you're using v16 and not v17? The sound is stuttering because the emulation speed is dropping below 100%, because that ryzen's single core performance isn't high enough to handle a pentium 233 (EDIT: in that particular situation). It has nothing to do with instructions or CPU brand. Searc...

Re: PCem won't grab Win 98 installation ISO nor img file

OEM images don't need a floppy, and can be booted with the boot sequence set to CDROM.

There are many guides online showing how to install windows 98. It's not a PCem matter.

Re: PCem won't grab Win 98 installation ISO nor img file

It's not a PCem issue. Only OEM windows 98 CDs are directly bootable and don't need a floppy. For any other type, a 98 floppy boot disk is also required. The boot sequence for the latter should start with drive A; the rest don't matter. If it still doesn't work, go to the D: drive (might be E:, with...

Re: Windows XP no sound

The highest end hardware that PCem emulates are Pentium 2 and Voodoo3, so 2002 and newer games won't have good performance, some will have graphical issues, and some will not work at all. I do not recommend it. (Many 2000-2001 games would also struggle on a P2 though) The majority of games that were...

Your post didn't make it clear that windows itself didn't have working audio. I thought only the games were lacking audio. No, PCem works mostly ok with windows 2000 and XP, however for games released in 2001 and earlier, there's no point in using anything above 98 SE. Windows 2000 and XP are NT bas...

Which lego games, exactly? If these were released after XP came out and are compatible with it, you should be able to make them work on windows 11 itself with minimal tweaking, without using PCem. If they are pre-XP games, use Windows 98 SE instead. There is no need to use an AWE32; that card's EMU8...

Re: Voodoo 3/Sound Blaster PCI Incombatibility

There is no compatibility issue between those cards. You simply have to set the IRQs correctly so that two devices don't share the same one.

You also didn't mention which boards you selected, so it's not much help.

Re: App for typing clipboard?

Regular VM software have guest additions that enable that feature, e.g. VMWare Tools. PCem doesn't have such tools.

I suppose one workaround is to use networking. Connect the host and PCem guest through a network and share a text file between the two.

You either get them by dumping from the hardware itself, download them in the form of "BIOS updates" from the manufacturers' websites, or from other sites that host them.

Re: Drives losing .img extension and disappearing from normal location

You don't have to keep each image file in its own folder (don't put them in the PCem root though); just give them names that can make identifying them easy and put them in a folder named HDD or something. Examples: 1A-win98se-p55t2p4-voodoo2.img 1B-win95osr2-hot557.vhd ... Also, unless you need them...

I've never had this issue. I mostly use ASUS P55T2P4 and Shuttle HOT-557. Which system/board are you emulating? I'm not sure if this is related, but are you storing PCem or the HDD images in a location that requires admin access, like "C:\Program files", etc? When creating images, don't ty...

PCem itself obviously supports ISO files, considering you managed to install windows XP. If you mean they don't show up on the guest XP, then as Arjen42 mentioned, they are probably of a format that is not supported by XP. I use CDBurnerXP to make them. P.S. I should note that there seems to be a sl...

Re: which is the best way benchmarking different cpus?

What about running CPU stress tests in the guest system (like Prime95 or one of the CPU tools from https://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) This would max out the guest CPU, so you can at check in parallel on the host CPU if it can handle the guest CPU's load, right? The emulated CPU does not behave like r...

You don't create roms from scratch. You find compatible rom files online, which were dumped from the original hardware or acquired from manufacturers' websites (bios files), and put them in PCem's roms folder.

Your current CPU probably can handle a Pentium 133, but the only way to make sure is to test it yourself. While running PCem, check "CPU time" in the Machine window. When it goes past 100%, the emulation speed will drop. Pentium Overdrive isn't really different from a regular one. What mat...

I wonder if the new 13th gen intel core i7/i9 laptop CPUs will fix many if not all of these slowdown issues?
