Re: Weird Zen 3 Behavior

I'd like to post a final update that using that "hack" of forcing PCEM to run without SMT I now have a Pentium II 233Mhz with a Voodoo 3 3000 running at 100% speed on an R5-5600X. I think I've discovered something beneficial here.

I've been using The Mummy: Return of the Pharaoh. The game uses quicktime video files for literally everything, so it hammers the virtual CPU hard.

Re: Weird Zen 3 Behavior

In theory, your CPU should do at least Pentium II 233 if not 266 flawlessly considering that the upper limit of flawless operation on my i7 6700 non-K is Pentium MMX 166. I can play several games at 100% on Pentium II 233 and some 3D-accelerated ones (e.g. The Need for Speed III) work most of the t...

Re: Stuttering sound in Win98 machine

Ryzen 5 3500 U is unfortunately too slow for proper Pentium MMX 233 emulation which is why you're getting stuttering sound. Try selecting Pentium MMX 166. OP might be able to get away with a Pentium 200, that's the limit of what I could do on my 3600X and currently can do on my 5600X. 233Mhz is def...

Weird Zen 3 Behavior

So, I'm running a 5600X over here and I can emulate up to a Pentium 200 with a Voodoo 3 3000 flawlessly. However, when I try to step up to a Pentium 233 I'm noticing PCEM is actually leaving a lot of power on the table. My CPU can sustain a clock speed of 4.5Ghz all core when it's turbo kicks in but...

It sounds like you're describing a horrible complicated way of implementing a frame rate lock. Something that doesn't work because the reasons CPU speed can break old games is more complex than that. Like what happens in the 7th Guest where access to a CPU that's signigantly faster than it was desig...

Did you do some footwork to see if it's real behavior?

It's not many but there actually is a couple odd DOS games that pitch a fit on Windows 9x operating systems.

Re: Maximizing PCem performance

It's about experimenting and tuning to figure what CPU you go into most things without noticeable slowdown with. For me that's so far turned out to be a Pentium MMX 200Mhz on my 3600X that hits 4.1Ghz PBO all core. 233Mhz if I'm not planning on running anything that uses Quicktime that particular se...

Posted this in my thread as well but there seems to be a bug in the Socket 7 CPUs where they take a lot more host CPU than they should and lag when decoding Quicktime video of any kind. Pentium II/233 works flawlessly in Quicktime heavy games Pentium MMX 233 has noticeable slowdown and I have to dro...

Trouble Installing Win98 PCI-128 Drives With Epox P55

I'm trying to use the Epox P55 motherboard to test something and ran into this issue where it can't find the drivers the Soundblaster 128 needs on the WIndows 98 SE ISO. This particular failure only happens when I try to build a system with this particular motherboard. The ASUS boards also get stuck...

Is sub-par FPS on Some 2.5D Games Normal Behavior For a Voodoo 3?

I'm running an MMX 233 and a Voodoo 3 3000.

Some 2.5D games like Outlaws and Doom 95 have surprisingly mediocre FPS on anything much higher than 320x240 and I was wondering if that was normal for the hardware or a PCEM bug.

As of v17 PCEM now has some weird conflicts with MSI afterburner that weren't present in previous versions like screenshots sometimes not working or locking up if you try to resize the window during the boot up with Afterburner running

I have a 3600X and can barely squeeze by a Pentium II 233 with a Voodoo 3 3000 in 98SE so your performance sounds about right. You're going to need a monster of a CPU like a 5Ghz+ overclocked i9 to attempt the really high-end stuff because it's really there for futureproofing and not realistically u...
