Will having more than 65 gb ram makes pcem faster?

Post by Solstar82 »

My current rig is I9 9900K 3.6 ghz, and 32 gb ram, and a geforce gtx 1080 8 gb, my pcem machine ie set at pentium 2 with voodoo 2 and 64 mb ram.

Games runs ok but in the os itself the mouse is sometime sslower, and the clicking sounds just "crackle" and some games could use more fps..so if i decided to upgrade my pc to say, 96 gb ram, would pcem runs faster? (and with smoother sounds)

Uprgrading the amount of GB RAM to 96 will most likely have no effect on PCem speed and performance. I did a similar thing with some PSX emulator about 20 years ago when I increased the amount of MB RAM from 64 to 256 and as far as I remember I couldn't gain a single FPS. Perhaps faster RAM speed could offer you a slight speed improvement, though I doubt there will be any notable difference.
It's mostly about IPC and clock speeds. Considering how my 6700 non-K performs with P166 MMX, your 9900K (theoretically) should handle something like PII 233 or maybe even 266 at 100%. I wouldn't go above those speeds if I had a 9900k and wanted to keep the performance at 100%.

PCem is almost completely dependent on your CPU. I am sure having a decent video card helps, but the CPU is by far the most important factor in PCem performance. RAM is not so much an issue as long as you have enough for your PC tasks.

May I ask what speed you typically get from your 9900k CPU, especially when under load?

For me, almost any Pentium 2 task below a P2 300 works quite well, and my 9750h holds only 4 Ghz on all core turbo speed. My PCem performance might dip a bit below 100%, but that is dependent on what program I am running. Typically my Pentium 2 performance only drops above 300 Mhz. On my 9750h a P2 450 is very program-dependent, but it will run Jedi Knight at or near 100% all the time.

I almost always pair the Pentium 2 with the Voodoo 3, and have never looked back.

It would be interesting to know how the 9900K performs with PCem since it, and the 9900KS, are essentially the benchmarks for any new PC purchase. With the new laptop CPUs coming on the market this summer, it would be very interesting to know if 5 Ghz has any impact on PCem performance. Running a P2 450 or even a Celeron 533 at 100% for most programs would make a significant boost in PCem capability.
