ps2 model 50 seems locked to 2mb

Post by senileblue »

Hello, I seem to be having some issues setting up a ps2 model 50... I hope I'm doing this right... Let me know if you want me to test anything or if you need more info. Thanks

* What the effect of the bug was (ie more than "doesn't work")
unable to use large (or small) amounts of memory

* Description of the error, if any
setting memory above 2mb causes a 164 error loop. setting it to 1mb sometimes also gives 160000 FFFE 201 error. sometimes either configuration will only see 512k memory.

* What software was running on the emulator at the time
none, booting the system

* What OS was running on the emulator at the time
none, booting the system, but i'm running pcdos 5.02

* What configuration was being used in the emulator
286/(10 or 25), 287, default waitstates, built-in video, no sound, esdi controller + 1 disk, 2x 1.44mb floppy, ps2 mouse

* Whether the dynamic recompiler was being used
grayed out on 286

* A screenshot of the issue, if possible
some attached

* Any additional information that seems relevant
first boot after adding memory or deleting the nvram file lets the system see the full memory amount, but since the nvram is blank or the config changed it wants the reference disk and after the reboot it goes back to the above behaviour.
the reference disk thinks the hardware is a type 1 planar which the technical documents say maxes out at 1mb onboard, type 2 planars max out at 2mb.
edit: i also tried adding the 286 expansion card adf's to the reference disk, but it doesn't seem to detect an expansion card to use it with

Hmm. I was going to say that PCem should be creating memory boards to expand above what the motherboard allows. However, a quick look at the code shows that this was never implemented for the model 50, only the 70 and 80. In which case 2 MB is the real maximum for the current release. Sorry! I will look to get this sorted in the future.

The technical specifications for the PS/2 Model 5 comes with 1 MB of RAM (standard) and can max out at 7 MB of RAM using memory options.

To be honest I've seen conflicting information of what the actual maximum is. I can't find it off hand, but I think I was reading 2mb on board (if type 2 planar), plus up to three expansion cards, which should be 8? (2+2+2+2) or 14(2+4+4+4)?... but the original release docs do say 7mb.

Good to know I'm not doing something wrong, it's been a long time since I've had the physical hardware... No worries. :D
