i7-3540M or i7-3632QM better for PCem performance?

Post by DX2-66 »

i would like to get your opinion regarding which would be better for PCem performance

i7-3540M 2 cores 4 threads Base - 3.0GHz, Turbo 3.7GHz

i7-3632QM 4 cores 8 threads Base - 2.2GHz, Turbo 3.2GHz

Will the higher 3GHz be better or almost equal to the 3632QM while using PCem? I am planning to upgrade one of laptops with the i3 processor of the same generation. I am using it mainly for PC Emulation and Dosbox with Windows 7.

Thanks.

PCem performance as far as I know is single threaded, so you'd be better served with stronger single core performance. They're both from the same generation so the 2 core might be the better bet for squeezing more out of it, but the difference might even be negligible. I don't know much about the i7 series, so I couldn't tell you where it stands other than the fact both are worse than what I used to have in my desktop computer for far too long, and that thing could barely handle Pentium 90 without beginning to sweat.

PCem uses several threads:

- one for the CPU and sound emulation
- one for the video emulation
- one/two for Voodoo emulation, doubled with SLI enabled

thanks , I think I will buy the 3632QM, since pcem is using more threads.
