Trident graphics (from downlods); display messed up

Post by A. Naim »

Decided to try 10.1. Looks much better; got Win98SE installed in it. Except...I tried the 3D Maze screensaver (seriously, why is this not in later versions of Windows?) and the colours can pretty much be described as "ugly". Literally not what I remember, and I've run Win98SE in Virtualbox not that long ago.

I also have "Voodoo Graphics" selected. It doesn't seem to be installed, though.

Is Trident a video card and not a monitor? How do I fix this, please?

Edit: There's a 3Dfx Voodoo under "Sound, video and game controllers".

Ok, I think I got this. Install Win98SE with a video card for SVGA, and select 3dfx Voodoo in the config. That'll make it available to games which use it?

And it's rather sad that GoG's version of Interstate '76 doesn't work with Windows 98.

I suppose there's economic sense in just maintaining the version most people "will want" for most of their games. OTOH, I'76 doesn't really work well on modern computers. Too fast, ironically.

Ah well. EBay to the rescue.

...Some years back, my Install disc for I'76 went missing. The music disc, I still have. No clue where the install disc went.

Well, an S3 Trio64 is a much better choice for displaying something useful on Windows 98/98SE, and the TVGA8900 is a video card, not a monitor, and limited to the resolution of 1024x768 at 256 colors at the highest possible.
Voodoo Graphics is a separate 3D graphics card for existing 2D VGA cards, mostly used for multimedia tasks such as games. (by default, Windows 98 and 98SE come with a driver for it installed, out of the box).

I'm currently running 3DFX with a Paradise Bahamas.

So basically, I should make sure I have a 2D VGA card installed, and a 3DFX Voodoo? Is the Paradise Bahamas 2D, or 3D?

Not sure how pressing the need is, but maybe a quick setup guide might help people? Particularly people who don't particularly remember how they got any of this working 18 years ago? ;)

Yes, you need to use the 3DFX (Voodoo) alongside a 2D card.

You should use a more modern video card to pair with a voodoo, like one of those PCI S3 Trio cards or ViRGEs. (Trio is a bit more compatible since some games will default to Virge's bad 3D first, missing out on 3dfx initialization)

FYI: S3 Trio is purely 2D (like everything else on the list), S3 ViRGE is 2D/"3D" :).

Well, the Paradise Bahamas doesn't allow you to have 1024x768x32bpp despite having support for 4MB, this is probably a bios limitation, just saying. For better compatibility (about 2D VGA cards), use the Phoenix S3 Trio64 one.

It's a chip limitation - the Vision864 chip on that card doesn't have enough memory bandwidth for 1024x768x32.

Thanks, everyone. :)

Between your help and remembering a bit more, I think I've got this figured out.

The only S3 Trio adapter you have listed as compatible (Number Nine 9FX) doesn't do 1024x768x32, either.

It's not listed in the readme.

it doesn't mean it isn't emulated.

I was suggesting that it should be included in the readme. Perhaps I could have been more clear about that.
