suitable machie to emulate Pentium II 500Mhz + Voodoo 3 3000
Hi all,
i'm planning to buy my next pc machine,
and i would like to consult with you guys , regarding which host machine can emulate this kind of build
Pentium II 500Mhz, Voodoo 3 3000.
i've done a lot of research , watch alot of videos with reviews , and found out , that what's matter is the cpu clock speed and the ipc ,
i've watched a video of emulation of pentium II 350Mhz, With Voodoo 3 2000, flawlessly with a cpu of i7 10700k which has a cpu clock speed of 5.1Ghz at Turbo .
and also watched another video with AMD 5950X Which has 4.9 Ghz Clock speed emulating the same with voice sound stuttering and cpu emulation speed drops 100% to 70-85% , which is upsetting :< , and surprising ....
i'am thinking about i7 12700k which has max clock speed of 5.1ghz and a higher ipc value than the 2 previous generations , or i9 12900ks which has 5.5ghz max clock speed (which has a very high cost...:< ) .
i know it's alot of money , so i need your advice . before spending that much money to fulfill this dream
appreciate any help

Considering actual single threaded performance of available CPUs, Pentium II 450Mhz (the fastest Pentium II processor) would require at least 13900K and even there 100% stable performance may not be guaranteed. I have 12900KF and I can do Pentium II 350 with ease. With Pentium II 400 I get some drop downs here and there, although some of these could also be related to the more recently introduced regressions in PCem development builds.

Re: suitable machie to emulate Pentium II 500Mhz + Voodoo 3 3000
I have a 5600X that can hit like 4.5Ghz all core and even with hacky stuff going on like forcing SMT off via a batch file my system still chokes in the current version if I load a Pentium II 233Mhz to the absolutely max by doing something absurd like running a 3D game at the lowest res and detail possible to force high CPU usage
So I'm going to guess a Pentium II 500Mhz would require an absolute beast of a flagship CPU with a good OC going

Would something with a ton of L3 cache like the 5800X3D help in this scenario?

My guess is that you would need a ~5.0 Ghz CPU to get a Pentium II 450 at 100% performance. One thing to keep in mind is that PCem performance does depend heavily on which program you are trying to run.
On my Core i7 9750h-based laptop, I can get most programs working at 100% performance on a Pentium II 233-300. My laptop has 16gb of RAM and a nvidia GTX 1660ti video card. On my machine, an emulated Pentium II 450 can run Jedi Knight and Episode 1 Racer at 100% in-game, but not while running in-game menus, video cutscenes or Windows itself. Only the in-game performance on those 2 games work at 100%.
The all-core turbo speed on my laptop is only 4 Ghz. Max speed is 4.5 Ghz.
Conversely, I tested PCem on a Ryzen 9 5900hx-based laptop and performance was only marginally better than my 3 year old laptop using the 9750h CPU. The 5900hx ran Jedi Knight and Episode 1 Racer at 100% performance on an emulated Pentium II 450 and even loaded Windows at 100% performance. Many old games failed to run at 100% even on an emulated Pentium II 350, like Star Trek Armada and NHL 2000. The max speed of this CPU was 4.6 Ghz. The all-core turbo speed of the 5900hx gravitated between 4.2-4.6 Ghz depending on jet engine-loud fan speeds. This was not good enough to run PCem at full specs.
I hope this information helps.

Re: suitable machie to emulate Pentium II 500Mhz + Voodoo 3 3000
It should be noted that apparently there is a compatibility issue with PCem's recompiler that causes some games, or certain parts of a game, to drop the performance considerably. On my ryzen 2600, I can run quake 2 on a pentium mmx 200, in either software or gl mode at 100% emu speed, and yet the 1995 terminator future shock frops it to 30-36%.
Such large drops should probably not be used as an indicator of the CPU's true performance.

Apparently the new dev is completely overhauling the compiler to fix some Dynarec optimization issues so those stability bugs might get ironed out in the first new version he releaseseddman wrote: ↑Thu 24 Nov, 2022 6:48 pmIt should be noted that apparently there is a compatibility issue with PCem's recompiler that causes some games, or certain parts of a game, to drop the performance considerably. It would be amazing to run the Pentium II 450 on my laptop without the performance dropping below 100%. It would be incredible, amazing and simply great.
In the meantime, I am not far from getting the chance to run some of my favorite games with PCem v13.1 through 17.
Perhaps I will play TIE Fighter and finish the game in PCem in a matter of days this upcoming holidays? Or Jedi Knight, Star Trek Armada or X-Wing Alliance?
As you can see, I am looking forward to the holidays.
Cheers,

My Ryzen 5600X is more or less fullspeed a lot of the time. But as others have said, there is currently a problem with the dynarec, and you will get severe slowdown in some places (like booting Windows) no matter what you do.

Also some games
Soldier of Fortune lowers the emulation speed on a P2/233 to as low as 90% no matter how much load you try to take off the virtual CPU by raising the graphics options, for example.
Re: suitable machie to emulate Pentium II 500Mhz + Voodoo 3 3000
I think 7900x or 13900k with self pgo compiled pcem version is enough.
