PCem minimum software requirements?

Post by terub56 »

I'm trying to run PCem v15 in an old Windows XP machine. The program itself runs fine, I'm able to run every machine I've tried. The problem is with the GUI. Every time I hit the "Configure" button and it loads the "Configure PCem" window, I'm able to change any configuration and save the changes, but when I close the window, PCem crashes.

The same happens every time I try to load or eject a floppy disk or a CD-ROM.

The GUI requires Windows Vista or newer or is there a library I should update?

I'm using Windows XP SP3.

Firstly, your computer does not meet the system requirements and is old so you might need a super gaming PC for the more stable environment

For the x86 targets, the absolute minimum's a CPU with SSE2 extensions. For the Windows requirements, the WxWidgets and SDL2 parts will bite.

The CPU has SSE2 extensions, it's an Intel Atom N280. The GPU it's an Intel GMA 950 and the laptop has 1 GB of RAM. As I said, I have no problems running any machine in PCem.

The problem it's with the GUI and the load/remove floppy disk/CD-ROM. I can use Daemon tools to load/remove CD-ROM, but it's imposible to load floppy disks.

Are there any libraries required to run PCem or it should run just fine with a clean install of Windows XP SP3?

I know that emulator, but it's not possible to use it with PCem. PCem allows to select a host CD-ROM drive (physical or virtual) but not a host floppy disk drive.

Strange that PCem crashes when dialog boxes are closed.

I did some testing with PCemV14 through PCemV17 and PCemVNext on Windows XP 32-bit. PCemV14 through PCemV17 worked without issues. PCemVNext did not start but that could be caused by dll issues. The machine used was a Core i7 950 which is from the same year as the atom, but with newer features.

I copied my PCem installation from my main Windows 11 machine into the same path on the Windows XP machine. If you copied your files from a Linux machine some paths in the config files might be incorrect which may cause the crashes. Also incorrect permissions would prevent changing to the config file, but I couldn't cause PCem to crash this way.

Many thanks for the tests.

I have found the problem. There is a bug in PCem which in certain conditions makes the main window change position every time you restart the emulator. This was discussed here: https://www.pcem-emulator.co.uk/phpBB3/ ... hp?p=15382

I use a workaround for this: set pcem.cfg as read-only. In Windows 7 or higher this works fine but in Windows XP it crashes the emulator every time you change the disk/disc or close the configuration window. I still don't know why this only happens in Windows XP.
