NeXTSTEP 3.3 and OPENSTEP 4.2 fail to install when using the Adaptec SCSI controller with the following message:

Checked the latest dev version (04949da) and the issue still occurs. I tried NeXTSTEP 3.1 this time as well and it seems a little more verbose:

I have just tested NeXTSTEP 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3 in v16-dev commit 6e158be and the issue still occurs. 4.2 is likely affected as well but has better ATAPI support than 3.x and does work with an IDE system.
