Code: Select all

GA686BX, Pentium II 233, Voodoo3 3000, SB16, 256MB, Windows 98SE:

* - newly emulated games!!!

Works:
- 3DMark2000 (1039 3D marks)
- Aliens vs Predator
- Asteroids (1998)
- Battlezone II
- Big Red Racing
- Black & White
- Carnivores 2
* Command & Conquer Renegade
* Counter-Strike 2D
* Dance Dance Revolution
- Doom II
- DOSBox 0.74-3 (running Doom)

- Red Faction
- Redline Racer
- Shadow Warrior
* Soldat (1.0.5)
- The Labyrinth (RealArcade version)
- Unreal Tournament
* Unreal Tournament 2004 (Direct3D)
- Worms Armageddon

Non-game specific bugs:
- Sticky keys, particularly when using modifiers. Noticed this in Heretic, MDK
- While running game, PCem UI hangs and crashes when CPU is changed (i.e.p2 233 to p2 450)

Bugs:
- 3DMark2001: Render-to-texture issue, PCem segfaults during "Demo"
* Empire Earth: Minor 2D menu text flickering
- Homeworld: Models in interface flash on OpenGL, Direct3D fine
- MDK2: that same CPU bug with screen fades
- Nuclear Strike: can hang at black screen on quit, *could* be a real bug as I recall Banshee having video issues with it in the day.
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein: when res is 1152x864, triangle_setup wrong order 32548 8178 11417.
- Quake (DOS, 400x300/512x384 bugged)
- Quake III Arena: No overbrights/brightness control
- Red Alert 2: Some offset bugs with menu graphics
- Starsiege Tribes: Bad CMDFIFO0 015f0808.
- Star Trek Starfleet Academy: Direct3D has broken sorting and major 2D glitches, freezes PCem. Software is fine
- Star Trek Voyager Elite Force: Brightness controls don't work; Holomatch is missing overbrights
* Star Wars Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast: No overbrights/brightness control
* Unreal Tournament 2003: triangle_setup wrong order 0 -54 2978

Unsure if real bugs, possibly bios related:
- Battle Arena Toshinden: VESA undetected, runs only in VGA
- Death Rally: VESA VBE undetected, can't run

REAL bugs:
- Serious Sam: lightmap corruption
- Unreal: Several versions prior to v222 don't work on the Voodoo3

Code: Select all

GA686BX, Pentium II 233, Voodoo3 3000, SB16, 256MB, Windows 98SE:

* - newly emulated games!!!

Works:
- Bejeweled
- Claw
- Daikatana
- Giants: Citizen Kabuto
- Monster Truck Madness
- Quake
- Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
- Star Wars Jedi Academy

Bugs:
- Chasm The Rift: Only VGA, no SVGA modes available
- Redline: Crashes to desktop when paletted textures are enabled
- Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee: DOS version hardlocks PCem at a black screen; Win version fine
- Operation Flashpoint: Fog bugs in Glide
- Star Trek Klingon Academy: 2D flickering

Unsure if real bugs:
- Sacrifice: visual polygon sorting glitches, may be driver issues as they don't occur under Windows 2000

Also after pasting this list, I just tried a Zappa P133+Mystique Win95 config and there's scary two tone beeps now! PODMMX200 can't boot Win95 on this anymore either.

While i did mention that Jedi Academy works, It's a little different than Outcast as it lacks overbrights. However there's a very weird bug with the character creation screen that causes the inner 3d viewport to focus above the head when the head is selected, which has me thinking it's a CPU bug. Does also occur on Winchip Interpreter, Windows 2000, and 3dfx Voodoo Banshee. It DOES NOT occur with the MesaFX ICD, so there's some bug going on with 3dfx's GL ICD.

The low-res VESA fix might've regressed low-res DirectDraw, as Quake2's rendering 320x240 software at half the height.

I am impressed that Jedi Academy works with the Voodoo 3. As I recall, the Voodoo 3 does not meet the minimum system requirements for JA.

It's a GL1.1 game where extensions are queried and used for more features (ARB shader stuff for glows mainly, that's the only thing V3 is missing in the experience besides 512/1024 textures). It works on a 3dfx Banshee too (a real one). Even a Rage Pro can drive Jedi Academy (with some texture flashing glitches). It only doesn't work on Voodoo2 and earlier (out of the box) as Raven stripped the gldriver / voodoo detection stuff out, but could work when MesaFX's thrown in there. The "minimum requirements" is more of a technical support filter in this case, Activision certainly wouldn't want to deal with PMMX V1 boxes in 2003+...

I wanted to report that connecting input remotely via Barrier/Synergy (From linux WS to windows Tablet) functions better/correctly on the current version. Mouse and keyboard connection works independently of guest state. Before on PCEM and other emulators you cant exit with a mouse click unless the guest is actually using the mouse.

Also I have a windows 3.1 boot image with ntfs support that had an issue with mouse input not working on V16 and other x86 emulators I tried, however this is working correctly on the new build. Thanks for all the hard work!

Its really nice and convenient to have working input via remote connection, but I don't image that its a recommended use case outside of developing/testing so I would not expect it to be a supported feature.

Running into a lot of

Code: Select all

Bad CMDFIFO0 015f0808
with OpenGL games like Alice, Arachronox, Tribes 2. Quake3 can do it when played in a window. MDK2 can also set it off when "Default OpenGL driver" is queried for extension info in the launcher.

Overbrights look good now!

Noticed the emulated CLUT doesn't appear to affect the filtered output and is done before it so the filters are less effective (or maybe they're regressed now as i'm not seeing any streaking in 4x1 mode, just the purple lines (which aren't made brighter by the CLUT))

Here's some old V3 3000 AGP TV out captures of me boosting the gamma up on a black screen with 2x2 and 4x1 filters, which show a boost to the purples of the filters. I also have various JPEGs of other TV captures, but they're kind of a mess to determine the filter behavior from, but the dither don't come through on them at least.

EDIT: Should mention that the CLUTs don't work in Windows 2000 (at least on the newer "voodoo series" driver).

- Occassionally, playing a game a while, then quitting, an explorer folder window would turn blank and hang.

e518b43 fixes Red Alert 2 and The Longest Journey, probably also the other 'trailing' bugs. I couldn't reproduce the Superbike 2001 termination, or the D3D issues with Starfleet Academy. I suspect some of the other bugs are out of date now as well.

Yeah I can't reproduce the SFA issues anymore either. I'm certain I haven't changed drivers from stock 1.07.00. Weird. SBK2001 does work on a Banshee at least. I've tried a config with older V3 drivers (1.03.04) and it works there too, so it could be a driver-related regression. Or maybe it's DirectX (9.0b vs 7)

Can confirm the lines are gone in Conquest, Throne, and Kohan

EDIT: Altered said Banshee system config to V3 3000 with 1.07.00 and DX9b and SBK2001 still works. strange. It's possible some system file must have corrupted on one of those CMDFIFO fatals from earlier versions....

EDIT 2: Appears to be sound driver related as i've switched to a SBPCI128 and SBK2001 works on the broken config now! Switched back to SB16 and it terminates again. The SB16 driver's the Win98 stock one (4.37.0000.1998), The other configs where it worked were also SB16 though... either way, banshee emulation doesn't seem to be a factor

EDIT3: Evolva has textures again. Not sure what happened earlier...

Going through 2000 discs now. I haven't ran into any major issues thus far. (Demos of full games i've have are mostly excluded)

I can probably expect issues once I get through the 1999 discs as I get closer to games from before the V3/Banshee's release...

My Superbike bug seems to affect the 1998 and 1999 games also! :S

Anyway, the only fatal on here is in a forgotten 3dfx tank sim which came before the Banshee (and possibly doesn't support it)

- Odium (demo): Minor portrait flickering in dialogue
- Spearhead (demo): Fatals after loading

Unknown banshee_cmd_write: addr=d8080048 val=00000000

Unsure if real bugs:
- Black Bass (demo): Trees sometimes glitch out in hardware 3d mode.
- Cyberstrike 2 (demo): Horizon clipping issue where it leaves a line of the distant mountains ahead of the sky. It's also possible that fog may not be working here. Game before Banshee.
- Nascar Revolution (demo): Sky glitches, garbled text (which also happens on Riva128). Game before Voodoo3.
- NHL '99 (demo): 2D corruption with menu fades in the software renderer, Direct3D is fine. Corruption is similar to how I remember Nuclear Strike videos on a real Banshee...
- NBA Live 2000 (demo): 3dfx mode, 3d players in frontend interface look very blue or green; brief text glitches at start of game. Direct3D is fine. Voodoo1 mode is fine.

Real bugs:
- Warzone 2100 (demo): Doesn't support Banshee cards.

That's weird when you said "forgotten tank sim". Spearhead was literally the first game that came to mind and I thought "nah there's no way" and sure enough...lol.

Anyway, for what it's worth, it works perfectly fine on v16 and Voodoo2.

Thanks for testing out these games prior to release. If I had the time I'd also jump in with my collection, but suppose that'll be helpful post-release, anyway.

leilei, you found some graphical errors with NHL 99 and I am curious to know if these were related to the in-game text when playing a match, specifically the in-game menus and scoreboards.

My NHL 2000 tests sadly report the same graphical issues with the Voodoo 3 as I saw with the Voodoo 2 and the Voodoo 1. I had previously believed that these issues with NHL 2000 would be resolved with the Voodoo 3 if it were ever added to PCem, but now after testing I noticed the issue is still there. I am still doing testing concerning this issue, and hope to see how the game works with Win XP and Win98 First Edition. Typically I use Win 98se.

In PCem, NHL 2000 has serious 2D graphical issues with the in-game text, namely the aforementioned in-game menus and scoreboards.

I admit I have not played NHL 2000 with Win 98 in many years, but I did play the game successfully on two XP PCs as late as this year with no problems.

While NHL 2000 never worked right with PCem so far, NHL 99 was always reliable and worked without any errors. My experience with NHL 99 was much more pleasant than NHL 2000. I played NHL 2000 back in the day so I have always been more fond of that game than NHL 99. Personally, I believe NHL 2000 is the better game, but anyone wanting to play these games in PCem would be better off using NHL 99, which runs without errors and has much lighter system requirements than NHL 2000.

I hadn't tested NHL2000 yet because I didn't have the NHL2000 demo on hand. I do know NHL2001 has issues on Voodoo2 with face textures overwriting text characters, but that doesn't happen with Voodoo3. Another thing though, I do recall some games on a real Voodoo2 that have broken text (Jedi Outcast) and particle corruption (MDK2) that are more on the fault of the drivers, so it's potentially real behavior...

NHL2001's quite playable on my machine, scales down well! Still CPU heavy though, a Geforce2 GTS couldn't help that in the day...

On Cyberstrike 2, i've noticed the fogless+clip issue occurs on Voodoo2, so maybe it is an emulation bug. Even tried June 98 drivers using the game's "Diamond Monster II" preset

(Offtopic: Cant find a manual to compile PCem myself on windows. Do you have to compile on LInux? Or is the an up-to-date "MinGW-Method" and tutorial?)

I'd be wary of crossing into the "HWTnL age" around fall 2002 with commercial Direct3D titles. NFSHP2 doesn't work on many pre-Geforce2 cards to the point there'll be snarky debug textures forced on some very-much-better-than-Voodoo3-but-still-not-quite-Geforce2-featured hardware. This was also when 512/1024 textures started to be more frequently used and there's some engines that don't sanity check and resample for texsize limits as they'd load a DDS directly or so, especially as there's no 3dfx around anymore that would otherwise iron out their drivers for DX8.1.

EDIT: did some testing on 97dd2aa

Code: Select all

GA686BX, Pentium II 233, Voodoo3 3000, SB16, 256MB, Windows 98SE:

Works:
- Cutthroats (demo)
- Dead Reckoning (demo)
- Death Drome
- Half-Life
- Microsoft Golf '99 (demo)
- Monaco Grand Prix (demo)
- Motocross Madness (demo)
- Nascar Heat
- Outlaws
- Prince of Persia 3D (demo)
- Shadowman (demo)

Bugs:
- Darkened Skye: Can fatal after clicking from inventory to main menu. Glide tested
  Bad CMDFIFO packet ffffffff 00a94d74
- Dungeon Keeper 2: Video playback issues (corrupted colors); ingame seems fine.
- NFL Blitz: Fades at start screens are very slow, some glitchy animated graphics (possibly real), segfaults PCem when ran at 512x384. Glide chosen; Direct3D is fine. Banshee (which NFL Blitz recognizes) has severe 2D flicker at 512x384 and slow fades)
- NFL Blitz 2000: fatals with "Glide3: Voodoo3"
Bad CMDFIFO packet 3f49cb0e 00b50410
- NHL 2000 (demo): Frontend is slow; in-game sometimes has text corruption.
- Outcast: strange texturing and voxel depth clipping issues that occur from certain viewing angles. Game is still playable

Unsure if real bugs:
- Klingon Honor Guard (v1.1 patch required): Glide shows texture bugs with menu and some effects. Patch still before Voodoo3, so it's possible that it only cares about the Banshee in their early-1999 driver state.
- Resident Evil 2 (demo) ("Unknown card" chosen): The blood splats during death appears to have an incorrect blending mode. It's a finicky game so it's probably real behavior...

Re: v17 compatibility & bug list

Post by leilei »

Seeing some hard freeze issues with Banshee on Win95+DX6.1 and some older PCI Banshee drivers (1.01.03 - Nov 98). Hot433 and GA686BX tested.

EDIT: can happen to Win98se+DX7 as well. Dxdiag will hardlock at the first frame of the Direct3D test. Half-Life can also give a CMDFIFO fatal using the Default OpenGL driver

Code: Select all

Unknown banshee_cmd_write: addr=d8080030 val=00000000
Unknown banshee_cmd_write: addr=d8080048 val=00000000
Unknown banshee_cmd_write: addr=d8080080 val=00000122
onesec
Bad CMDFIFO packet 42ffffff 0060c6f4
EDIT2: Apparently, mixing old banshee drivers with a Windows 95 install that has had a Voodoo2 before it - is a bad idea. Things are looking more stable after removing them through Add/Remove. No idea how PCem behaves with a V2/V3 combo yet (which does work IRL if drivers are installed in a V3->V2->V3 order).

In all CGA video cards, the image is not displayed in full screen (an invisible black border remains at the edges in both window and full screen modes). While in other video cards (EGA, VGA) the image is correct and full screen. Please fix this bug.

That is not a bug. That's the back porch/border color area (which is missing emulation on EGA/VGA cards), and if you ask me, that border could be made even larger considering what monitors those cards were for.....
