What's the most powerful CPU you can emulate without slowdowns? I guess around a Pentium 120?mysoft wrote:Core2quad 2.5ghz

Re: Host machine survey
with the dynamic recompiler and depending what i do... even the 233mhz works at 100% but it easily goes down to <50% so i would say Pentium 120 is a good estimative.omarsis81 wrote:What's the most powerful CPU you can emulate without slowdowns? I guess around a Pentium 120?

Re: Host machine survey
I tossed this on my laptop with a Pentium N3700 as a test the other day (my sister has the same laptop and she was interested in a few old DOS games).
The fastest machine it seems to be able to keep at 100% emulator speed with the recompiler off is a 486DX-33. It can handle a DX2-66 if I don't play anything 'higher' than DOOM.
Pretty impressive imo considering that this chip is basically a 1.6ghz mobile CPU crammed in a 6W package. Haven't tried it yet with the recompiler on due to my recent issues with it (and Im not sure if it improves performance or not?)

Can do pretty much everything up to P70 fullspeed, W/voodoo emulation. Technically enough to complete Half-life. At 10fps XD. Not fast enough for any MMX cpus though. Heard there was a dynarec rewrite in the works? Here's hoping

Re: Host machine survey
Since my i5 desktop is no longer working, my hardware has changed
My main PC:
AMD Phenom X4 9950 @2.6GHz
12GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 9600GT 1GB
dual-boot of Windows 2000 SP4 (with BlackWingCat kernel) and Windows Vista x64 SP2
PCem performance: Interpreter maxes out at a 486DX2/66 (with occasional slowdown), recompiler at a 486DX4/120 (the 5x86 and Pentium 60-90 CPUs have some slowdown but are quite usable)
My gaming laptop:
Intel Core i7-4700HQ @2.4GHz
8GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 840M 2GB
Windows 7 x64 SP1
Still need to test the current PCem release's performance on this machine
My main laptop:
AMD Athlon II Neo @1.7GHz
2GB RAM
ATi Radeon HD4250 256MB
Windows XP SP3 x86 (considering a switch to Linux)
Still need to test the current PCem release's performance on this machine

Re: Host machine survey
Install Rain 2.0 if you haven't to reduce emulated CPU load.
The idle loop seems more intensive to emulate than other things so it can cheat you a faster emulated CPU for some tasks.
Anyway might as well add mine:
Core i7 6700K 4.6 GHz
32GB DDR4 2666 MHz
AMD Radeon RX580 / Nvidia GTX 1080
Arch Linux Host

Edit: It runs up to a Pentium MMX 233 at full speed or very close to it. It could probably also handle Voodoo 2 SLI, but I've been distracted by other hobbies instead of getting that working.

Re: Host machine survey
It is possible to include the fastest virtual CPU that is possible to emulate with the physical one? Or include a FAQ or pin a post with this information.
Mine is i5-3210M (2 cores / 4 threads at 2.5 GHz) and I am able to emulate up to Pentium@75 at almost full speed.

How do you test the max emulable CPU? What kind of benchmark can I run to determine that?
